Basil growing in Kenya: Records and Planning Worksheets
Keep evidence that answers a real operating question
For basil growing, the record should connect the promised output, its cost and the buyer's acceptance. Begin with:
Keep observations of picking method, pack density, delivery condition and the chef's final use, linking repeat orders to the presentation that survived the actual route.
An order and acceptance record
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Output and exclusions | Choose a basil product for a chef's particular preparation, distinguishing intact decorative leaves from herbs destined for chopping, where superficial appearance has a different value. |
| Sale unit | bunch or living pot |
| Acceptance check | Ask the chef to open the delivered sample and use it during service, noting bruising, aroma and the usable portion after ordinary kitchen handling work. |
| Missed-cost check | Charge the order for gentle picking, protective packaging and any leaves removed during sorting, rather than pricing basil solely from the weight cut in the bed. |
| Failure to investigate | A bundle can smell appealing at harvest yet arrive with darkened crushed leaves, causing a garnish customer to reject stock that another cooking application might accept. |
Add the date, private customer reference, agreed price, advance, balance, promised handover and actual acceptance. Record a change before carrying it out. An unresolved complaint needs its own action and follow-up date rather than being overwritten by the next order.
A supplier and cost record
For each required input, record the specification, quantity, supplier identity, quote date, delivered cost, payment terms and reason for selection. Match the record to the receipt and inspect what arrived. Keep one-time setup, recurring inputs and refundable deposits in separate categories so that the same cash movement is not counted twice.
A weekly review
Compare accepted output with started output; reconcile money collected with outstanding balances; investigate rework and returns. Review whether measured capacity can meet the next commitment. A positive surplus estimate does not remove a shortage of cash caused by late collection.
Use sources within their stated scope
- KEPHIS eCitizen service portal — Official plant-health, planting-material and certification service entry point. Confirm the requirements for the exact nursery, seed or trading activity. Reference recorded 2026-10-26.
- KALRO information brochures — Official route to agricultural extension resources; do not treat this index as cultivar-specific cultivation instructions or verified commercial yield data. Reference recorded 2026-10-26.
- World Vegetable Center: Agroecological production of vegetables in Kenya — Kenya vegetable-production context, adaptation to local conditions and monitoring. Does not validate every specialty crop in this collection. Reference recorded 2026-10-26.
These references route sector and activity questions. They do not independently establish local customer demand, supplier stock, a complete budget or business profitability. A reference date records the earlier check; it is not a claim that every linked requirement was reverified today.
The complete downloadable guide includes editable planning worksheets. Save backups privately when they contain personal, customer or supplier information. These planning forms do not replace required statutory records or professional advice for a regulated task.
Evidence register for this particular offer
- University of Maryland Extension: Care of Herbs and Starting Herbs from Seed - Culinary-herb identity, drainage and propagation distinctions only; foreign calendars, rates and treatment recipes are not adopted. Recorded 2026-10-26.
- Codex Code of Hygienic Practice for Fresh Fruits and Vegetables (2013 retrieved edition) - Harvest-container hygiene, contamination prevention and lot traceability only; this retrieved edition does not establish current Kenyan licensing or a crop-specific pesticide programme. Recorded 2026-10-26.
- AgriJibu: Basil Classic Seeds 10g - Seller primary listing of product identity, 10 g unit and KSh 160 display price; claimed agronomy/certification and yield are not independently verified. Recorded 2026-10-26.
These recorded references support only their stated scope. They do not establish current supplier stock, actual local demand, operator competence or complete commercial feasibility. Preserve source dates and record new checks separately.
Match the evidence to a decision
| Decision question | Business-specific record to retain |
|---|---|
| Was the input fit for use? | Compare approved leaf sample with cultivar description and keep the packet. |
| Was the work acceptable? | Discoloured or deteriorated packs are held; no generic refrigeration setting or untested shelf life is promised. |
| What remains unresolved? | Local cultivar and postharvest handling need validation. |
The operating pack provides an itemised quote tool, supplier request, sales draft, job card, quality response sheet, evidence gaps, operations desk and cashflow/launch-review workbook. Keep a separate private backup per actual job and per scenario. Test restoring it before closing the original. Exported files may contain customer or supplier information; do not publish completed private records as SEO content.
