Beaded sandal making in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand
The buyer and the buying decision
Gift shoppers and customers seeking distinctive everyday or occasion shoes. The offer to test is: Beaded sandals combining a tested footwear base with original securely attached bead designs.
Develop the bead design around a wearable sandal base, agreeing colour arrangement, attachment method, and whether the customer prioritises intricate appearance or simpler daily use.
Separate interest from an accepted order
Build a design sample and test bead attachment and wearer comfort before expanding motifs.
The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.
Collect evidence specific to this offer
Record base pattern, bead layout, attachment sequence, walking feedback, loose components found, and customer approval of the balance between decoration and everyday wearing comfort.
| Question to resolve | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| What exactly will the buyer accept? | Have the customer walk in the sample pair and inspect both designs, checking strap comfort, bead security, matched patterns, and whether decorations contact the foot awkwardly. |
| What is included in the first trial? | Develop the bead design around a wearable sandal base, agreeing colour arrangement, attachment method, and whether the customer prioritises intricate appearance or simpler daily use. |
| How will a prospect see the offer? | Show original designs on actual samples and obtain permission before using protected motifs or logos. |
| What must happen before repeating the trial? | Matched design with secure beadwork and comfortable intended use. |
Decide whether to continue
Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. A striking design can lose repeat customers when beads rub the foot or decorative attachment weakens the strap despite the pair appearing symmetrical in photographs.
If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.
Turn the example into a buyer test
Fictional worked job: Produce five adult sandal pairs using already complete, correctly fitted sandal bases with decorative sew-on bead panels, without altering structural straps or sole attachment. One original100-bead design per pair:50beads per sandal on separate maker-approved decorative tabs. No loose charms, toddler product or claim that bead decoration improves footwear strength.
| Buyer discussion | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Specification to confirm | If there is no supported decoration area, change base/design rather than pierce load-bearing straps. |
| Output to inspect | A single detached bead is a rework hold; do not sell it as harmless because it is decorative. |
| Failure that can defeat acceptance | Beads rotate and expose sharp hole |
Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.
What a failed test should change
Check bead quality/thread path.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
