Book cover design in Kenya: Operations and Quality Checks
Deliver the agreed result consistently
Develop the cover from the manuscript's genre, reader expectations, title hierarchy, print dimensions, and publishing platform requirements, confirming rights for artwork, fonts, and author imagery early.
The operating sequence for this offer is:
- Review the authors synopsis, audience and authorized title, then agree cover rights, edition details and the intended printer or ebook platform.
- Develop original artwork with documented asset licences and obtain visual approval before finalizing technical dimensions and typography.
- Confirm final page count and printer spine requirements, inspect the export and hand over the agreed rights and source-file package.
Put acceptance into the job record
Cover dimensions and metadata match the final edition.
Review the cover as a small thumbnail and a printed wrap proof, checking title readability, spine placement, back-cover copy, barcode allocation, and correspondence with the book's content.
Inspect at the point where a correction is still possible, then again at handover. Record rejected or incomplete output separately from accepted output. A completed task is not automatically an accepted task, and an invoice does not establish that the customer received the right result.
Measure real capacity
Time preparation, the main operation, transport, cleaning, approvals and correction as applicable. The slowest stage determines how much you can promise. Where two orders need the same person, space or equipment at the same time, resolve the conflict before confirming both deadlines. An additional enquiry should not erase a commitment already made.
| Operating checkpoint | Evidence for this business |
|---|---|
| Before starting | Develop the cover from the manuscript's genre, reader expectations, title hierarchy, print dimensions, and publishing platform requirements, confirming rights for artwork, fonts, and author imagery early. |
| During delivery | Develop original artwork with documented asset licences and obtain visual approval before finalizing technical dimensions and typography. |
| At acceptance | Review the cover as a small thumbnail and a printed wrap proof, checking title readability, spine placement, back-cover copy, barcode allocation, and correspondence with the book's content. |
| At the pilot review | Keep manuscript brief, comparable positioning references, rights records, trim and spine specifications, thumbnail tests, proof corrections, author approvals, and final files matched to the intended publishing edition. |
Keep a correction and escalation rule
When inputs, access, specifications or customer instructions change, pause the affected work and confirm the effect on time and cost. Do not quietly lower the acceptance standard to avoid a delayed delivery. Keep rework caused by your error distinct from a customer-requested change of scope and agree the remedy clearly.
A cover may attract attention yet disappoint readers when its visual genre promises a different book, or its spine becomes misaligned after the manuscript page count changes.
Retain the minimum records needed to investigate a complaint without disclosing unrelated personal information. Use measured delivery and actual acceptance as the basis for expanding capacity, rather than the maximum theoretical output of a tool or production line.
Operating control points for this exact offer
| Sequence | Work method | Release checkpoint |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Record final interior page count, trim, binding, paper and printer/retailer. | A changed page count or paper triggers a new cover template. |
| 2 | Use the printer's calculator/template and record its version and dimensions. | Do not transfer KDP bleed/spine rules to another printer without its confirmation. |
| 3 | Place front title/author, back blurb and approved identifier area using the template's safe zones. | Barcode space and spine text are not obscured by art or a decorative border. |
| 4 | Inspect a thumbnail and actual-size print proof, checking title clarity and back-copy readability. | Image licence covers book-cover/commercial use and no temporary comp image remains. |
| 5 | Supply a printer-specific full-wrap PDF and ebook front image in the required dimensions. | Reopen files; verify ebook image is not the whole wrap and print PDF has the correct final template size. |
Do not substitute a tick for an observation: record the count, measurement, approved sample or evidence reference used at each checkpoint. Mark unresolved work as held and identify who can approve the recheck.
Diagnose a failure before repeating it
| Observed symptom to investigate | Check the cause | Proposed response |
|---|---|---|
| Spine text shifts off centre | Compare final template and page count with the design file. | Regenerate dimensions and re-position using printer guidance. |
| Ebook upload shows back cover | Inspect exported image area. | Export front-only artwork at the destination's required size. |
| Barcode space too dark | Check printer/retailer barcode area instructions. | Reserve the required clear area and obtain a fresh proof. |
These are diagnostic prompts, not proof of the cause in a real incident. Separate suspect output, record any correction and repeat the relevant acceptance check. Link rejected units, rework time, replacement materials, customer credits and collection delays to the actual job result.
