Boot cleaning service in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand
The buyer and the buying decision
Workers, riders and outdoor users. The offer to test is: Boot cleaning matched to leather, suede or synthetic construction and intended use.
Assess boot material and intended use before selecting a cleaning service, distinguishing dirt removal from any manufacturer-supported conditioning or water-repellent treatment requested by the owner.
Separate interest from an accepted order
Clean a few material types using supported care instructions and record time per condition.
The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.
Collect evidence specific to this offer
Record construction and material, original marks, selected care products, trial observations, drying period, owner expectations, and the specific finish accepted at the completed boot handover.
| Question to resolve | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| What exactly will the buyer accept? | Have the owner review a cleaned sample area where suitable, checking surface appearance, material preservation, and whether the agreed finish matches the boot's original character. |
| What is included in the first trial? | Assess boot material and intended use before selecting a cleaning service, distinguishing dirt removal from any manufacturer-supported conditioning or water-repellent treatment requested by the owner. |
| How will a prospect see the offer? | Approach work crews with a simple cleaning schedule and explain product limitations. |
| What must happen before repeating the trial? | Cleaned boots with material preserved and no invented waterproof restoration claims. |
Decide whether to continue
Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. A service can disappoint when aggressive cleaning changes a suede texture or the customer expects waterproof performance to be restored by ordinary cosmetic cleaning alone.
If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.
Turn the example into a buyer test
Fictional worked job: Clean three boot pairs as separate jobs: one smooth leather work boot, one nubuck casual boot and one textile/membrane hiking boot, only after identifying their actual makers and care. Remove ordinary mud; exclude chemical/body-fluid contamination and restoration of protective certification.
| Buyer discussion | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Specification to confirm | Unknown hazardous contamination is refused/referred; a safety boot with damaged toe/sole is not cleaned into safe service. |
| Output to inspect | Mlining must be fully dry; no waterproof test, safety stamp or protective recertification is issued. |
| Failure that can defeat acceptance | Nubuck dries flat/shiny |
Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.
What a failed test should change
Check oil/wax contamination or excessive rubbing.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
