Cardboard collection in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand

The buyer and the buying decision

Shops, warehouses and an identified downstream recovery buyer. The offer to test is: Collect clean dry cardboard against a buyer's agreed grade and handover specification.

Agree cardboard grades, collection frequency and storage expectations with businesses, confirming buyer specifications before promising to take coated, wet or heavily contaminated packaging alongside clean cartons.

Separate interest from an accepted order

Confirm the lawful collection route and buyer acceptance before a small scheduled pickup.

The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.

Collect evidence specific to this offer

Keep collection volumes, buyer-accepted weights, rejected grades and loading times, noting which businesses provide consistent clean material and which require clearer storage guidance before another pickup.

Question to resolveEvidence to retain
What exactly will the buyer accept?Run a sample pickup through sorting and buyer delivery, checking accepted weight, contamination deductions and whether flattened storage fits the space available at the collection premises.
What is included in the first trial?Agree cardboard grades, collection frequency and storage expectations with businesses, confirming buyer specifications before promising to take coated, wet or heavily contaminated packaging alongside clean cartons.
How will a prospect see the offer?Approach businesses generating predictable cardboard only after securing a suitable buyer.
What must happen before repeating the trial?Accepted cardboard meets the buyer's grade and every load has a traceable destination.

Decide whether to continue

Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. Bulky collections can produce little income when wet cartons lose buyer acceptance, pickup sites do not flatten boxes or a distant buyer absorbs the margin in transport.

If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.

Turn the example into a buyer test

Fictional pilot: schedule one cardboard pickup from five consenting shops, with an illustrative 200 kg gross load,10 kg container tare and 20 kg segregated rejects, leaving 170 kg for downstream acceptance. Sell a defined collection service; any recovery-buyer payment is separately documented and not assumed revenue. Confirm applicable collection/storage/transport requirements and an actual authorized destination before starting. Exclude wet/food-contaminated board, hazardous packaging, confidential records, baling machinery and unsafe accumulation.

Buyer discussionEvidence to retain
Specification to confirmA recycler website is a contact route, not proof it accepts this load.
Output to inspectCollection-fee and material-sale receipts remain distinct.
Failure that can defeat acceptanceBuyer rejects wet centres

Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.

What a failed test should change

Open sample bundles and compare grade terms.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
