Craft workshop experiences in Kenya: Registration and Activity Checks
Define the activity that authorities need to assess
Provide a craft-making experience in which guests complete one original item.
Choose a craft project beginners can finish within the session, specifying which preparation is completed beforehand and what participants may realistically take home afterward.
Describe that exact operation when checking requirements. State where the work takes place, whether customers enter the premises, who performs technical tasks and whether you manufacture, resell, deliver or coordinate the service. Requirements can change with these facts; a broad business category is not a complete permit determination.
Sector questions to investigate
- Ask TRA whether the specific paid tour, recreation or travel activity falls into a regulated enterprise class.
- Obtain route, venue or protected-area permissions and confirm qualified guide or transport arrangements where needed.
- Explain participation limits and emergency procedures; a waiver does not replace safe operation.
Keep registration separate from permission to operate
A registered business name does not itself establish approval of premises, products or professional work. Use the Business Registration Service to check the appropriate registration route. Ask the relevant county office which premises and trading checks apply to the actual activity. Confirm tax and invoicing obligations with KRA for your circumstances rather than copying another trader's treatment.
Prepare a written enquiry
| Information to provide | Business-specific starting point |
|---|---|
| Proposed output | Provide a craft-making experience in which guests complete one original item. |
| Scope and exclusions | Choose a craft project beginners can finish within the session, specifying which preparation is completed beforehand and what participants may realistically take home afterward. |
| First operating step | Agree the craftsperson's project, guest capacity and design rights, confirming whether items can be completed and taken home within the advertised session. |
| Quality and acceptance | Observe a novice following the instructions without the maker completing difficult steps, checking that the finished item demonstrates the advertised technique and materials. |
Add the county, location, premises arrangement, scale, equipment and responsible person's qualifications. Ask which authority handles an issue if it falls outside the first office's remit. Record the answer, reference link, date checked and any renewal or inspection condition. A guide's reference list is a route to verification, not an approval document.
Decide what must wait
Do not offer a regulated service or make a safety, accreditation or certification claim that you cannot substantiate. Resolve an unanswered prerequisite before accepting work that depends on it. A demand interview can often precede trading; a paid or physical trial still needs the appropriate permissions and safe arrangements.
The experience fails when an attractive sample hides advanced steps, forcing staff to finish everyone’s work or leaving participants with incomplete projects at departure.
No universal licence package, current fee or exemption is asserted here. The official links below support only their stated scope.
Prepare a precise activity enquiry
Describe this actual operating scope to the relevant authority or competent adviser: Fictional workshop: eight adults make one A5-size decorative paper-weaving card each in a 75-minute session. The example uses an A5 card backing, a slotted paper panel, contrasting paper strips and small glue dots at the edges. It is an introductory paper craft, with no claim that the pattern represents a named cultural tradition. Include pre-cut alternatives for guests who prefer them. The finished card is decorative and is not sold as a washable placemat or a load-bearing container.
Use these operating details to make the enquiry specific:
| Detail to disclose | Why it can affect the answer |
|---|---|
| Card and paper - Example batch: ten A5 backing cards, ten paper panels and eighty 1.25 cm contrasting strips. | Explain the actual premises, scale, use and who will perform the task. Ask which current rule applies to these facts. |
| Cutting tools - Eight suitable scissors or a supervised shared set, plus a pre-cut kit option. | Explain the actual premises, scale, use and who will perform the task. Ask which current rule applies to these facts. |
| Adhesive and sleeves - Paper-compatible glue and eight sleeves or protective folders sized for A5 work. | Explain the actual premises, scale, use and who will perform the task. Ask which current rule applies to these facts. |
Keep the reply date, official source, exact activity facts and any conditions together. This is an enquiry preparation method, not a determination that a licence, exemption or fee applies. The earlier source dates do not mean legal requirements were rechecked today. Resolve these outstanding checks before relying on a broad business description:
- Material prices and exact paper/adhesive compatibility need a physical pilot.
- The sample is independently designed; it is not a Crayola-sponsored class or an authenticated traditional craft.
