Crochet bag making in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand
The buyer and the buying decision
fashion shoppers The offer to test is: Crochet bags with reinforced handles and defined capacity
Design crochet bags around carrying purpose, finished dimensions, strap comfort, and lining options, specifying which features are included before taking colour specific customer orders.
Separate interest from an accepted order
Make one bag and test seams with a realistic light load
The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.
Collect evidence specific to this offer
Record yarn batch, tension sample, dimensions before and after use, strap feedback, finishing time, and customer requests for pockets or closures before expanding the range.
| Question to resolve | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| What exactly will the buyer accept? | Place representative contents into a sample and inspect shape, handle attachment, lining movement, closure access, and whether customers can find items without excessive stretching. |
| What is included in the first trial? | Design crochet bags around carrying purpose, finished dimensions, strap comfort, and lining options, specifying which features are included before taking colour specific customer orders. |
| How will a prospect see the offer? | Offer fashion shops a filled sample bag, handle-construction photographs and clear dimensions showing what the bag can realistically accommodate. |
| What must happen before repeating the trial? | Sound handle joins and accurate size description |
Decide whether to continue
Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. A bag with attractive stitches can become impractical when handles lengthen during ordinary use or the lining pulls against the crocheted shell under its contents.
If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.
Turn the example into a buyer test
Fictional crochet order: two unlined flat adult tote bags with target bodies 250 × 280 mm, each assembled from two original single-crochet rectangles and two purchased 500 mm webbing handles. In a washed sample gauge of sixteen stitches and eighteen rows per 100 mm, each panel starts with forty stitches and fifty rows, giving about 250 × 278 mm before joining. Gauge is a worked design assumption, not an observed result. Do not promise a load capacity or call the bag waterproof.
| Buyer discussion | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Specification to confirm | Use the actual relaxed gauge to recalculate the forty-stitch/fifty-row draft if it differs from the example. |
| Output to inspect | Deliver only matching accepted pieces; advertise the measured final size rather than the original untested target. |
| Failure that can defeat acceptance | Panel widens each row |
Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.
What a failed test should change
Count the turning-chain treatment and end stitches.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
