Custom chopping board making in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand
The buyer and the buying decision
Home cooks, chefs and gift retailers. The offer to test is: Make chopping boards with verified suitable timber and food-contact finish.
Select suitable timber and construction with appropriate product guidance, defining the board's intended kitchen use and care before adding decorative engraving or joining unusually shaped timber offcuts.
Separate interest from an accepted order
Produce one sample and confirm food-contact material suitability with competent guidance.
The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.
Collect evidence specific to this offer
Record timber source, construction choices, finish information and customer care questions, then use the pilot to refine both making methods and the product description before accepting personalised batch orders.
| Question to resolve | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| What exactly will the buyer accept? | Inspect the finished board for surface defects, sound joints and the approved finish, providing supported care information instead of unverified claims that a material is automatically hygienic or antibacterial. |
| What is included in the first trial? | Select suitable timber and construction with appropriate product guidance, defining the board's intended kitchen use and care before adding decorative engraving or joining unusually shaped timber offcuts. |
| How will a prospect see the offer? | Show kitchenware retailers traceable samples and care instructions. |
| What must happen before repeating the trial? | Material and finish suitability is documented; do not invent antibacterial claims. |
Decide whether to continue
Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. A dramatic decorative joint opens with ordinary care because material suitability and construction received less attention than the visual pattern, making the board unsuitable for its intended kitchen task.
If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.
Turn the example into a buyer test
Fictional sample order: Two wooden chopping boards, each approximately 350 × 250 × 25 mm, made from known suitable timber with documented food-contact-compatible adhesive/finish where used. Competent maker reviews construction and care. Exclude unknown reclaimed/treated wood, unsupported antibacterial claims and transferring ordinary furniture finishes to food contact.
| Buyer discussion | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Specification to confirm | Natural appearance does not establish material suitability. |
| Output to inspect | No dishwasher-safe or hygiene guarantee unless supported by the actual construction/products. |
| Failure that can defeat acceptance | Joint opens |
Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.
What a failed test should change
Review material movement and actual adhesive process.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
