Decorative wall finishes in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand

The buyer and the buying decision

Cafe owners and homeowners seeking a single focal wall. The offer to test is: Create one approved textured or decorative wall feature.

Create a sample board and an on-wall trial for the selected decorative finish, agreeing texture variation and viewing distance before committing to an entire room.

Separate interest from an accepted order

Make a portable sample board before accepting a full wall commission.

The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.

Collect evidence specific to this offer

Record sample approval, application method, material batch and client observations, preserving enough detail to discuss realistic future touch-ups without promising invisible repairs.

Question to resolveEvidence to retain
What exactly will the buyer accept?Review the dried trial under the client's lighting, confirming acceptable variation and edges so the finished wall can be judged against a shared physical reference.
What is included in the first trial?Create a sample board and an on-wall trial for the selected decorative finish, agreeing texture variation and viewing distance before committing to an entire room.
How will a prospect see the offer?Show physical finish boards to interior decorators and small hospitality owners.
What must happen before repeating the trial?Texture, pattern and colour agree with the signed sample rather than an online reference alone.

Decide whether to continue

Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. The customer expects a perfectly repeatable pattern from a hand-applied finish, producing disagreement because natural variation was not demonstrated before the large wall was completed.

If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.

Turn the example into a buyer test

Fictional sample order: A four-square-metre decorative textured feature wall with one customer-approved finish, pattern direction and colour, applied by a competent decorator. Produce a separate 0.5-square-metre sample first. This is a decorative finish on sound dry substrate, excluding active damp, structural crack bridging, fire-performance claims and copying a photograph as an exact handmade pattern guarantee.

Buyer discussionEvidence to retain
Specification to confirmAgree whether switches, trims and corners remain exposed and who handles any electrical changes.
Output to inspectNormal handmade variation is distinguished from bare patches, abrupt joins or unapproved pattern changes.
Failure that can defeat acceptancePattern looks coarser than approved

Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.

What a failed test should change

Compare dried sample and actual tool/material application record.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
