English conversation lessons in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand
The buyer and the buying decision
Adult learners wanting to speak more confidently at work or in daily interactions. The offer to test is: Run practical English conversation sessions around everyday speaking tasks.
Teach spoken English around the learner's actual situations, such as workplace enquiries or daily conversation, agreeing confidence goals, correction preferences, and suitable practice topics.
Separate interest from an accepted order
Offer a small session practising introductions, clarification and a simple role-play.
The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.
Collect evidence specific to this offer
Record learner speaking opportunities, successful messages, recurring misunderstandings, clarification strategies, correction preferences, and situations the learner wants to handle more independently after the trial lessons.
| Question to resolve | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| What exactly will the buyer accept? | Ask the learner to complete a fresh conversation task, listening for meaning, turn taking, clarification, and intelligibility rather than expecting imitation of one preferred accent. |
| What is included in the first trial? | Teach spoken English around the learner's actual situations, such as workplace enquiries or daily conversation, agreeing confidence goals, correction preferences, and suitable practice topics. |
| How will a prospect see the offer? | Advertise a sample task and clear proficiency level through workplaces and community groups. |
| What must happen before repeating the trial? | Learners complete the selected communication task; accent imitation is not presented as the only standard. |
Decide whether to continue
Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. Conversation lessons disappoint when the tutor speaks most of the time or corrects every minor error so frequently that the learner stops attempting spontaneous communication.
If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.
Turn the example into a buyer test
Fictional ENG-125 is a 45-minute adult English appointment role-play. Original dialogue: 'Could I book Tuesday at ten?' 'Tuesday is full. Would Wednesday at eleven suit you?' 'Yes. Please confirm Wednesday at eleven.' Output is two independent role-plays and a private note on clarification, time phrases and intelligibility, without accent correction promises.
| Buyer discussion | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Specification to confirm | Avoid collecting real medical or banking details. |
| Output to inspect | Record observed ability with learner permission. |
| Failure that can defeat acceptance | Memorises without understanding |
Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.
What a failed test should change
Change day/time unexpectedly.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
