Farm visit experiences in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand
The buyer and the buying decision
Families, school groups and domestic visitors. The offer to test is: Coordinate a supervised farm visit explaining a working farm's actual practices.
Plan the visit around the farm’s real daily activities, defining demonstration areas and visitor boundaries without requiring workers to interrupt essential animal or crop care.
Separate interest from an accepted order
Run a small visit with the farm owner and a defined safe visitor route.
The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.
Collect evidence specific to this offer
Record activities actually available, group movement time, repeated questions, sanitation bottlenecks and host feedback, using these observations to revise the next advertised visitor programme.
| Question to resolve | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| What exactly will the buyer accept? | Walk the complete route with a trial group and farm host, testing visibility of demonstrations, handwashing access and control of movement near restricted areas. |
| What is included in the first trial? | Plan the visit around the farm’s real daily activities, defining demonstration areas and visitor boundaries without requiring workers to interrupt essential animal or crop care. |
| How will a prospect see the offer? | Approach farms with clear visitor boundaries and approved learning or recreation goals. |
| What must happen before repeating the trial? | Visitors see the promised areas safely without disrupting essential farm operations. |
Decide whether to continue
Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. A visit can disappoint despite appealing scenery when seasonal work differs from advertising, visitors cannot hear explanations or children wander into operational areas.
If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.
Turn the example into a buyer test
Fictional sample service: coordinate a two-hour educational visit for eight adults to a consenting working coffee farm, hosted by its own guide. The sample itinerary includes a welcome, a field explanation, a demonstration area viewed from an approved visitor position and a closing discussion. Farm machinery operation, chemical handling, animal contact, picking and food service are excluded unless the host explicitly offers and manages them. The coordinator sells scheduling and visitor support, not unrestricted access to a farm or a guarantee that seasonal processing will be underway.
| Buyer discussion | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Specification to confirm | The host confirms the date, route, inclusions and commercial arrangement in writing. |
| Output to inspect | Host and coordinator agree the completed scope and no unapproved access or activity is represented as included. |
| Failure that can defeat acceptance | Processing is not running on the day |
Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.
What a failed test should change
Check the host’s seasonal confirmation and sold inclusions.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
