Flower seedling nursery in Kenya: Operations and Quality Checks

Deliver the agreed result consistently

Plan seedling batches around the intended planting season and buyer use, distinguishing ornamental varieties by eventual habit and flowering expectations supported by the seed supplier’s information.

The operating sequence for this offer is:

  1. Choose flower varieties suited to the intended buyers and check source and nursery requirements, recording each batch's seed or propagation origin.
  2. Label trays with sowing dates and varieties and track germination, water and handling losses so the production record reflects saleable seedlings rather than seed input.
  3. Grade plants at the agreed transplant stage and give buyers clear identity and care information, keeping weak or diseased seedlings out of the delivery batch.

Put acceptance into the job record

Seedlings are correctly labelled and strong enough for the agreed transplant stage.

Check a representative tray for uniform establishment, healthy roots and labels, asking a buyer to confirm that size and planting readiness fit their actual garden project.

Inspect at the point where a correction is still possible, then again at handover. Record rejected or incomplete output separately from accepted output. A completed task is not automatically an accepted task, and an invoice does not establish that the customer received the right result.

Measure real capacity

Time preparation, the main operation, transport, cleaning, approvals and correction as applicable. The slowest stage determines how much you can promise. Where two orders need the same person, space or equipment at the same time, resolve the conflict before confirming both deadlines. An additional enquiry should not erase a commitment already made.

At the pilot reviewLog seed source, sowing dates, emergence, saleable tray counts and customer planting dates, using real sell-through to schedule the next batch and reduce avoidable carryover losses.

Keep a correction and escalation rule

When inputs, access, specifications or customer instructions change, pause the affected work and confirm the effect on time and cost. Do not quietly lower the acceptance standard to avoid a delayed delivery. Keep rework caused by your error distinct from a customer-requested change of scope and agree the remedy clearly.

A nursery can grow good flowers yet lose sales when seedlings mature after customers finish planting or variety labels detach and make mixed trays impossible to sell accurately.

Retain the minimum records needed to investigate a complaint without disclosing unrelated personal information. Use measured delivery and actual acceptance as the basis for expanding capacity, rather than the maximum theoretical output of a tool or production line.

Operating control points for this exact offer

SequenceWork methodRelease checkpoint
1Record seed species/cultivar, supplier, lot, pack count, dates and instructions. Ask a local horticultural adviser about sowing timing for the actual site instead of adopting a UK last-frost calendar. The order and packet identify French marigold and any protected-variety propagation restrictions are resolved.
2Clean two 72-cell trays and prepare suitable seed-starting medium with drainage. Fill consistently and label tray/cell groups with sowing date and seed lot; keep the 56 unused seeds under their actual storage instructions.144 filled/sown cells reconcile to the 200-seed pack without assuming every seed becomes saleable.
3Sow according to the actual packet and water gently so seeds/medium are not washed away. Record the chosen method and daily germination count. Provide suitable conditions and adjust any cover/ventilation according to the actual crop instructions and observations.Seedlings are counted as emerged, not accepted sale stock.
4Monitor crowding, light, moisture and stem condition. Separate collapsed or suspect seedlings for competent assessment and avoid keeping a saturated tray merely because others look dry. Do not prescribe chemical treatment from a generic nursery manual.Losses have date/location notes and no diseased-looking plug enters the customer batch.
5Prepare plants gradually for the buyer’s expected conditions using local advice, then grade root cohesion, stem stability and identity. Deliver 100 only if actually accepted, with handling/planting information and a count; otherwise revise availability honestly. Each plug lifts as a supported plant rather than bare damaged roots or a weak newly emerged stem.

Do not substitute a tick for an observation: record the count, measurement, approved sample or evidence reference used at each checkpoint. Mark unresolved work as held and identify who can approve the recheck.

Diagnose a failure before repeating it

Observed symptom to investigateCheck the causeProposed response
Seedlings collapse near medium levelCheck moisture, density and distribution of affected cells.Separate affected material and obtain competent diagnosis; do not distribute the suspect tray.
Plugs fall apart when liftedCheck root establishment and actual medium condition.Hold them for further development and adjust dispatch timing.
Tray labels are lostCompare source/cell records without guessing cultivar.Withhold a named-cultivar claim unless identity can be restored reliably.

These are diagnostic prompts, not proof of the cause in a real incident. Separate suspect output, record any correction and repeat the relevant acceptance check. Link rejected units, rework time, replacement materials, customer credits and collection delays to the actual job result.
