French bean growing in Kenya: Marketing and Finding Buyers

Reach a buyer who can accept the offer

Local wholesalers or kitchens with clear pod specifications.

Obtain written buyer specifications, especially if a buyer mentions export supply.

Begin with the problem and specification rather than promising a return on investment you cannot establish. The proposed output is: Produce French beans to an agreed local-buyer grade.

Make the first message specific

Explain what you will deliver, what is excluded and what the prospect needs to confirm before a quotation. Use this scope when preparing a sample, demonstration or introduction:

Select a domestic kitchen or trader whose French bean specification you can inspect directly, and define a separate outlet for beans outside that preferred grade.

Ask who approves purchases, who accepts the output and how payment is arranged. These can be different people. An informal recommendation is useful for an introduction but does not replace the buyer's approval.

Use proof that matches the promise

Have the customer examine a representative harvest before sorting, explaining which pods they reject for tenderness, shape or visible damage during their normal buying process.

Keep approved examples, inspection records or handover evidence that demonstrate this result. Obtain permission before using a customer's name, photograph, premises or work. Do not invent reviews, imply an endorsement or display private contact details as marketing proof.

Follow the lead through to collection

StageWhat to record
ContactSource of the introduction and permission to follow up.
Qualified enquiryRequired specification, buying authority and timing.
QuotationScope, exclusions, price, delivery and payment stages.
Accepted resultHave the customer examine a representative harvest before sorting, explaining which pods they reject for tenderness, shape or visible damage during their normal buying process.
Repeat decisionKeep photographs of the agreed pod examples and record accepted weight, rejected reasons, labour time and the price actually received for each grade sold locally.

Trial a small plot for a named buyer; do not assume export acceptance.

Review what it cost to obtain and fulfil a paying order, including travel and follow-up. High enquiry counts do not compensate for a route or delivery arrangement that loses money. Keep cancellations, complaints and refusals visible when evaluating a channel.

The plan fails when local sales assumptions borrow premium specifications or prices from unfamiliar export channels that the grower has neither access nor acceptance for.

Expand outreach only when the promised scope can be delivered reliably. Use permission-based follow-up and an achievable response time instead of bulk unsolicited messages.

A scope-led outreach draft

The supplied draft below is ready to adapt, not a message already sent:

“Chef, can we agree which of these pods matches your cooked side dish? My trial would be fifteen kilograms of that grade, separated into three weighed lots. Please check the middle of each crate, not only the top. If your trim loss or cooking result differs from this sample, we will resolve the specification before I reserve another harvest for you.”

Replace claims with proof of this offer

Sales claim to substantiateEvidence before repeating the promise
Required resultRecord accepted kilograms, payment terms and whether its preparation waste matches the pilot sample.
Input suitabilityCheck cultivar and lot; do not accept planting material identified only as beans.
Failure to address honestlyPods are stringy

Remove placeholders and replace assumed prices with an approved scope and actual cost estimate. Do not advertise technical certification, current stock, guaranteed income or results you cannot substantiate. Record enquiries, accepted quotes, declined quotes, delivered orders and collected balances separately; a sent message is not a sale.
