Fruit-infused water catering in Kenya: Registration and Activity Checks
Define the activity that authorities need to assess
Provide fruit-infused water as part of an event service.
Define the beverage station as a staffed service or a supplied dispenser arrangement, clarifying who refreshes fruit, replenishes cups, and removes used ingredients.
Describe that exact operation when checking requirements. State where the work takes place, whether customers enter the premises, who performs technical tasks and whether you manufacture, resell, deliver or coordinate the service. Requirements can change with these facts; a broad business category is not a complete permit determination.
Sector questions to investigate
- Check the proposed premises and food-handler requirements with the county public-health office before preparing or selling food. The Ministry checklist is a starting point, not a site approval.
- For manufactured or prepacked products, confirm the relevant product standard, certification, ingredients and labelling requirements with KEBS before sale.
- Obtain competent product-specific validation for preservation, storage and any shelf-life claim; the business brief is not a safe processing recipe.
- For dairy drinks or water treatment/packing, verify the exact activity with the relevant dairy or water/product authority; a delivery-only role is different from processing.
Keep registration separate from permission to operate
A registered business name does not itself establish approval of premises, products or professional work. Use the Business Registration Service to check the appropriate registration route. Ask the relevant county office which premises and trading checks apply to the actual activity. Confirm tax and invoicing obligations with KRA for your circumstances rather than copying another trader's treatment.
Prepare a written enquiry
| Information to provide | Business-specific starting point |
|---|---|
| Proposed output | Provide fruit-infused water as part of an event service. |
| Scope and exclusions | Define the beverage station as a staffed service or a supplied dispenser arrangement, clarifying who refreshes fruit, replenishes cups, and removes used ingredients. |
| First operating step | Confirm the event headcount, service duration and responsibility for water, fruit, cups and cleanup, approving a safe water source before setup. |
| Quality and acceptance | Walk the organiser through a mock guest approach, checking pouring access, queue direction, drip collection, and how staff recognise when the station needs attention. |
Add the county, location, premises arrangement, scale, equipment and responsible person's qualifications. Ask which authority handles an issue if it falls outside the first office's remit. Record the answer, reference link, date checked and any renewal or inspection condition. A guide's reference list is a route to verification, not an approval document.
Decide what must wait
Do not offer a regulated service or make a safety, accreditation or certification claim that you cannot substantiate. Resolve an unanswered prerequisite before accepting work that depends on it. A demand interview can often precede trading; a paid or physical trial still needs the appropriate permissions and safe arrangements.
An attractive dispenser can become unpopular when guests cannot operate the tap easily or fruit obstructs service while nobody accepts responsibility for replenishment.
No universal licence package, current fee or exemption is asserted here. The official links below support only their stated scope.
Prepare a precise activity enquiry
Describe this actual operating scope to the relevant authority or competent adviser: Fictional event booking: two filled five-litre fruit-infused-water dispensers with orange and lemon additions, setup and recovery. Traceable potable water supplies the drink; fruit adds flavour and does not purify it. Cups, serving staff and refills are excluded. The actual fruit preparation and holding plan remains subject to competent operator approval.
Use these operating details to make the enquiry specific:
| Detail to disclose | Why it can affect the answer |
|---|---|
| Two five-litre dispensers - Existing dispensers with compatible taps, lids and manufacturer cleaning instructions. | Explain the actual premises, scale, use and who will perform the task. Ask which current rule applies to these facts. |
| Water and named fruit additions - Ten litres of traceable water and an operator-approved measured fruit allocation. | Explain the actual premises, scale, use and who will perform the task. Ask which current rule applies to these facts. |
| Station inventory - Two unit labels, two drip trays and a counted serving-cup option quoted separately. | Explain the actual premises, scale, use and who will perform the task. Ask which current rule applies to these facts. |
Keep the reply date, official source, exact activity facts and any conditions together. This is an enquiry preparation method, not a determination that a licence, exemption or fee applies. The earlier source dates do not mean legal requirements were rechecked today. Resolve these outstanding checks before relying on a broad business description:
- Actual operator trial, accepted yield, packaging fit and handling controls remain untested; do not claim a completed field trial.
- Current supplier availability, unobserved input rates, tax and applicable Kenyan approvals require confirmation; foreign guidance does not authorize local operation.
