Garden pea growing - Worksheets, research and references
Keep evidence that answers a real operating question
For garden pea growing, the record should connect the promised output, its cost and the buyer's acceptance. Begin with:
Record pod weight, usable shelled weight, shelling time and buyer preference after preparation, then note which format generated a paid reorder from the trial customer.
An order and acceptance record
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Output and exclusions | Choose whether the pea offer saves kitchens shelling work or supplies attractive pods for retail display, then keep these two products distinct during trial sales. |
| Sale unit | kilogram of agreed format |
| Acceptance check | Have the buyer compare prepared peas from a pod sample with the offered shelled pack and judge freshness, consistency and kitchen labour saved in practice. |
| Missed-cost check | Calculate the shelled product from weighed pods after shell removal and include shelling labour, packaging and additional handling instead of merely comparing advertised selling prices. |
| Failure to investigate | A higher shelled-pea price can be misleading when shells, damaged peas and preparation time consume most of the apparent premium available over whole-pod sales. |
Add the date, private customer reference, agreed price, advance, balance, promised handover and actual acceptance. Record a change before carrying it out. An unresolved complaint needs its own action and follow-up date rather than being overwritten by the next order.
A supplier and cost record
For each required input, record the specification, quantity, supplier identity, quote date, delivered cost, payment terms and reason for selection. Match the record to the receipt and inspect what arrived. Keep one-time setup, recurring inputs and refundable deposits in separate categories so that the same cash movement is not counted twice.
A weekly review
Compare accepted output with started output; reconcile money collected with outstanding balances; investigate rework and returns. Review whether measured capacity can meet the next commitment. A positive surplus estimate does not remove a shortage of cash caused by late collection.
Use sources within their stated scope
- World Vegetable Center: Agroecological production of vegetables in Kenya — Kenya vegetable-production context, adaptation to local conditions and monitoring. Does not validate every specialty crop in this collection. Reference recorded 2026-10-26.
- Egerton University: Production and Marketing of African Indigenous Leafy Vegetables — Official university route to a technical manual for indigenous leafy vegetables; specialist cultivation should be checked against the manual and local extension advice. Reference recorded 2026-10-26.
- KEPHIS eCitizen service portal — Official plant-health, planting-material and certification service entry point. Confirm the requirements for the exact nursery, seed or trading activity. Reference recorded 2026-10-26.
These references route sector and activity questions. They do not independently establish local customer demand, supplier stock, a complete budget or business profitability. A reference date records the earlier check; it is not a claim that every linked requirement was reverified today.
