Guest information booklet design in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand

The buyer and the buying decision

Guesthouses and holiday homes receiving repeated practical questions. The offer to test is: Design a guest information booklet from verified operator instructions.

Organise information around guest tasks such as arrival, appliance use and departure, separating essential instructions from optional local recommendations that need periodic review for accuracy.

Separate interest from an accepted order

Draft a short booklet for one property and have the operator test every instruction.

The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.

Collect evidence specific to this offer

Record reader search difficulties, questions requiring host help, corrected contact details and approval dates, keeping a clear source for every property-specific operating instruction included.

Question to resolveEvidence to retain
What exactly will the buyer accept?Ask someone unfamiliar with the property to use the draft booklet to find a key instruction and operate an agreed appliance without additional host explanations.
What is included in the first trial?Organise information around guest tasks such as arrival, appliance use and departure, separating essential instructions from optional local recommendations that need periodic review for accuracy.
How will a prospect see the offer?Use repeated guest questions to propose a property-specific booklet.
What must happen before repeating the trial?Instructions work and emergency contacts are checked; private access details are distributed securely.

Decide whether to continue

Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. A beautifully designed booklet fails when emergency contacts are outdated, instructions assume local knowledge or important departure requirements are buried among promotional recommendations for guests.

If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.

Turn the example into a buyer test

Fictional design order: create an eight-page A5 guest information booklet, including covers, for one six-room guesthouse. Supply a mobile PDF with tested links and ten printed folded/stapled copies. Planned content is welcome/contact, arrival, room facilities, house rules, local essentials, troubleshooting contact, checkout and back-cover version details. The operator supplies and approves all facts. Exclude unverified medical/emergency contacts, entry codes in public files, invented restaurant recommendations and technical repair instructions.

Specification to confirmEvery operating instruction names the actual appliance or process; an unknown detail remains a question rather than generic copy.
Output to inspectPrint and digital editions show the same approved version and no access secrets leak into publicly shareable material.
Failure that can defeat acceptancePrinted pages read out of sequence

Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.

What a failed test should change

Compare the folded proof with the eight-page map.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
