Hardware supply delivery in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand
The buyer and the buying decision
Hardware retailers and nearby contractors. The offer to test is: Deliver hardware orders matched to the shop invoice and safe transport capacity.
Start with invoiced orders whose dimensions and unloading needs suit the verified operator, distinguishing shop loading, site unloading, and assistance carrying goods beyond access.
Separate interest from an accepted order
Trial a small invoiced delivery with a verified vehicle operator.
The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.
Collect evidence specific to this offer
Document invoice lines, loading counts, operator suitability checks, site access conditions, unloading assistance, damaged finishes, returned goods, and any extra journey approved by the customer.
| Question to resolve | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| What exactly will the buyer accept? | Reconcile the invoice at shop and site, checking similar fittings and fragile finishes separately rather than treating a signed delivery slip as sufficient evidence. |
| What is included in the first trial? | Start with invoiced orders whose dimensions and unloading needs suit the verified operator, distinguishing shop loading, site unloading, and assistance carrying goods beyond access. |
| How will a prospect see the offer? | Offer hardware shops bounded routes and transparent loading charges. |
| What must happen before repeating the trial? | Correct goods arrive without exceeding safe transport limits. |
Decide whether to continue
Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. A contractor may receive the correct item count yet lose work time because near-identical fittings have different sizes or essential accessories remain at the shop.
If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.
Turn the example into a buyer test
Fictional hardware job HDW-08 carries six boxed door-handle sets, two sealed 2-litre paint tins and a small sealed carton of screws from one hardware shop to a carpenter's workshop. The shop provides an itemised sales receipt and product handling information. The delivery service verifies package identity and count; it does not select structural fixings, recommend chemicals or certify that materials suit construction work. Oversized loads, compressed gases, loose sharp metal, leaking chemicals and substances the carrier cannot legally transport are excluded. A sample manifest records handle code H6, quantity six, paint colour code P14, tins two, screw carton S1.
| Buyer discussion | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Specification to confirm | Carrier explicitly accepts the declared products and load; unresolved dangerous-goods classification stops the booking. |
| Output to inspect | Transport completion is separated from any product suitability dispute; returns have their own custody record. |
| Failure that can defeat acceptance | Wrong colour arrives |
Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.
What a failed test should change
Compare paint colour code on the manifest, tin and sales receipt.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
