Leather bag repair in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand
The buyer and the buying decision
Owners of useful bags with damaged straps, stitching or hardware. The offer to test is: Repair of leather bags after condition assessment, with a written repair scope and material match limits.
Inspect the entire bag before accepting the repair, distinguishing the requested defect from nearby weakened leather and agreeing how closely replacement materials can realistically match.
Separate interest from an accepted order
Complete a modest repair within your tools and skills, recording condition before work.
The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.
Collect evidence specific to this offer
Record intake photographs, material condition, agreed repair location, replacement components, disclosed colour differences, functional checks, and customer acceptance of any weaknesses outside the commissioned repair.
| Question to resolve | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| What exactly will the buyer accept? | Have the customer check the repaired mechanism with representative contents, assessing movement, attachment security, finish differences, and whether the remaining weaknesses match the intake explanation. |
| What is included in the first trial? | Inspect the entire bag before accepting the repair, distinguishing the requested defect from nearby weakened leather and agreeing how closely replacement materials can realistically match. |
| How will a prospect see the offer? | Use honest before-and-after examples and decline bags too degraded for a reliable repair. |
| What must happen before repeating the trial? | The agreed defect is repaired and any remaining weaknesses are disclosed. |
Decide whether to continue
Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. A replaced strap can fail the customer's expectations when its anchor sits in deteriorated leather, even though the new strap itself is well constructed and correctly attached.
If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.
Turn the example into a buyer test
Fictional handbag repair: replace one shoulder strap and patch one isolated lining tear on an owner-authorised bag. Draft replacement strap stock 1.2 m long; two clips; one lining patch cut up to 150 × 150 mm from 0.1 m² stock, final method approved after assessment. Original carrying strength or designer authenticity is not guaranteed.
| Buyer discussion | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Specification to confirm | No cleaning, cutting or brand claim before authorised scope. |
| Output to inspect | No unapproved load test or original-strength claim; owner accepts defined repair rather than entire bag warranty. |
| Failure that can defeat acceptance | New strap sits crooked |
Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.
What a failed test should change
Compare clip orientation and attachment lengths with intake measurements.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
