Leather watch strap making in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand
The buyer and the buying decision
Watch owners and repair shops. The offer to test is: Leather watch straps made to precise lug width, length and buckle compatibility.
Measure the watch's attachment arrangement and the wearer's wrist, agreeing lug width, buckle compatibility, strap length, leather description, and any limitations related to existing hardware.
Separate interest from an accepted order
Measure one watch and fit a sample through a competent watch-repair partner if needed.
The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.
Collect evidence specific to this offer
Record lug and buckle measurements, existing hardware condition, wrist fit, selected fastening holes, material description, attachment checks, and owner acceptance of the completed compatible strap.
| Question to resolve | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| What exactly will the buyer accept? | Have the owner check the fitted strap with appropriate assistance, confirming secure attachment, comfortable fastening, free watch movement, and no damage to the case or lugs. |
| What is included in the first trial? | Measure the watch's attachment arrangement and the wearer's wrist, agreeing lug width, buckle compatibility, strap length, leather description, and any limitations related to existing hardware. |
| How will a prospect see the offer? | Partner with reputable watch repairers and quote after measuring the actual watch. |
| What must happen before repeating the trial? | Correct compatibility and secure attachment without damaging the watch. |
Decide whether to continue
Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. A strap can look correct yet fail the commission when its thickness prevents proper attachment or the buckle position sits uncomfortably on the wearer's wrist.
If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.
Turn the example into a buyer test
Fictional worked job: Make three two-piece leather watch straps from one wearer-approved original pattern for three identical conventional watches with verified20mm straight lugs and compatible18mm buckles. Sample finished strap lengths before fitting are115mm and75mm, adjusted after wrist trial; excludes proprietary connectors, underwater use and expensive-watch fitting without competent watchmaker.
| Buyer discussion | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Specification to confirm | 20 mm is measured between actual lugs, not the width of the old stretched strap; unknown/proprietary fitting pauses manufacture. |
| Output to inspect | Owner never uses watch weight as a destructive retention test; uncertainty prevents installation/release. |
| Failure that can defeat acceptance | Bar channel too thick for case |
Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.
What a failed test should change
Watchmaker checks fold thickness/clearance.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
