Livestock weighing service in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand
The buyer and the buying decision
Farmers and traders wanting documented liveweights. The offer to test is: Weigh livestock using appropriate equipment and safe handling.
Define livestock weighing around a suitable handling area, appropriate equipment and an agreed result record, specifying who provides competent animal restraint before accepting a farm visit booking locally.
Separate interest from an accepted order
Trial the service with suitable animals and competent handlers.
The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.
Collect evidence specific to this offer
Record animal identification, equipment reference, setup observations, measurement result and any interrupted attempts, documenting conditions that prevent a usable reading instead of quietly substituting an estimate for clients.
| Question to resolve | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| What exactly will the buyer accept? | Have the owner watch identification, equipment setup and the weighing sequence, confirming that each reported result belongs to the correct animal and reflects the agreed measurement procedure clearly. |
| What is included in the first trial? | Define livestock weighing around a suitable handling area, appropriate equipment and an agreed result record, specifying who provides competent animal restraint before accepting a farm visit booking locally. |
| How will a prospect see the offer? | Offer a transparent demonstration to farmer groups with safety arrangements agreed first. |
| What must happen before repeating the trial? | Explain scale limitations and make readings visible to both parties. |
Decide whether to continue
Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. The service becomes unreliable when animals are hurried through poor handling arrangements and identities are mixed, making neatly printed weight records commercially useless for the farmer's actual decisions.
If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.
Turn the example into a buyer test
Fictional on-farm weighing visit for twenty goats, supplying twenty identity-linked live-weight tickets and a CSV. Use a correctly installed suitable animal platform and competent handlers; the operator records measurements, not diagnoses, medicine doses or animal valuations. Commercial settlement or other regulated use requires the actual scale/operator legal-metrology suitability to be confirmed. A weigh-tape estimate is not a platform-scale measurement.
| Buyer discussion | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Specification to confirm | Platform and handling route suit all twenty goats; unknown calibration/status prevents a certified trade-weight claim. |
| Output to inspect | Twenty unique IDs have accepted readings or explicit unweighed exceptions; no missing goat receives an estimated number disguised as measured. |
| Failure that can defeat acceptance | Reading drifts with an empty platform |
Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.
What a failed test should change
Check debris/contact, power and zero following the manual. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
