Market shopping errands in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand

The buyer and the buying decision

Busy households and small food businesses. The offer to test is: Shop from a customer-approved list with transparent substitution rules.

Specialize the trial in an agreed basket with clear preferences for ripeness, pack size, seller choice, substitutions, and separate service charges before purchasing.

Separate interest from an accepted order

Trial one market trip with a fixed spending authority.

The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.

Collect evidence specific to this offer

Retain approved list versions, seller quotations where available, substitution requests, customer response delays, purchase evidence, change returned, and item condition at household handover.

Question to resolveEvidence to retain
What exactly will the buyer accept?Review actual goods with the customer against the shopping list, checking produce quality decisions and ensuring every receipt, unreceipted purchase, and change balance reconciles.
What is included in the first trial?Specialize the trial in an agreed basket with clear preferences for ripeness, pack size, seller choice, substitutions, and separate service charges before purchasing.
How will a prospect see the offer?Recruit through trusted neighbourhood referrals without promising lowest market prices.
What must happen before repeating the trial?Purchases and spending reconcile to the approved instructions.

Decide whether to continue

Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. An apparently cheaper substitution can make the errand unusable when a household needs a specific ingredient, package size, or dietary characteristic for planned cooking.

If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.

Turn the example into a buyer test

Fictional errand MKT-06: one household authorises purchase of 2 kg rice in sealed retail packs, six tomatoes by count, one cabbage and two 1-litre bottles of cooking oil from a named market and shop. The runner provides itemised receipts, a purchase photograph where allowed and change reconciliation. A sample substitution line says 'cabbage unavailable: call before replacing; maximum approved grocery spend KSh 1,800'. This figure is a fictional customer ceiling, not an estimate of today's grocery prices. Raw meat, medicine, alcohol and buying on credit are outside this initial order.

Buyer discussionEvidence to retain
Specification to confirmRead the completed list back before taking customer funds; a kilogram and a piece are never interchangeable.
Output to inspectOpening float plus approved additions minus documented purchases equals returned change; the fee is shown separately.
Failure that can defeat acceptanceCustomer disputes a substitution

Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.

What a failed test should change

Check the written alternatives and approval message.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
