Mobile coffee cart in Kenya: Risks and Launch Plan
Set the conditions for a safe commercial test
- power interruptions
- slow service
Demand can exceed practical capacity when every drink requires a different preparation sequence and waiting customers leave before the operator reaches their order.
A risk list is useful only when it changes a decision. For each risk, write the observable warning, who checks it and the response before the next commitment. Do not treat a reserve of money as permission to continue unsafe or unauthorized work.
Use a small, measurable pilot
Trial a permitted event and record drinks served per actual service hour.
The pilot scope is: Select a menu the cart can execute within its available water, power, counter space, and payment arrangements at the intended trading location.
| Gate | Evidence before continuing |
|---|---|
| Scope agreed | Select a menu the cart can execute within its available water, power, counter space, and payment arrangements at the intended trading location. |
| Output acceptable | Observe orders from payment through collection, checking whether the operator can distinguish drinks, manage clean tools, and serve without reaching across hot equipment. |
| Costs recorded | Cost setup journeys, water replenishment, milk discarded under the handling plan, grinder adjustment losses, payment handling, and time spent dismantling the cart after trading. |
| Buyer response recorded | Record orders by drink, preparation interruptions, consumable shortages, queue abandonment, setup duration, and receipts after accounting for the complete mobile trading shift. |
Stage the launch around prerequisites
First confirm the buyer specification and activity requirements. Then compare suppliers, establish suitable facilities and prepare the operating record. Run the bounded trial when those prerequisites are in place. Review actual costs, quality failures and cash collected before increasing the commitment.
This sequence is not a promise that the complete business cycle fits into 30 days. Growing periods, qualifications, approvals, seasonal access and customer buying cycles can require longer. Revise the schedule when a prerequisite changes rather than skipping it to meet a launch date.
Choose continue, revise, pause or stop
Continue only when the scoped result is accepted and direct costs and payment timing are workable. Revise one part of the offer if the problem is identifiable and affordable to test again. Pause when required information, permission, skills or resources are missing. Stop the affected work when safety, consent or lawful authority is uncertain.
Keep a maximum test loss and unpaid-balance limit suited to your actual funds. A successful single delivery is useful evidence, but it does not establish year-round demand or justify committing every available resource.
Tie launch milestones to observable checks
| Risk signal | Evidence to inspect | Response to test |
|---|---|---|
| The queue exceeds the office break | Compare observed service time by drink, cup marking and payment/token handling with the promised forty-serving window. Identify whether machine capacity or mixed menu preparation is the bottleneck. | Agree a narrower supported menu, appropriate staffing or staggered service before confirming capacity. Do not promise an untested servings-per-minute figure to preserve the booking. |
| The agreed power supply is unavailable | Check the host’s actual supply/access confirmation and the exact equipment requirements with the trained operator. An available socket alone does not establish a suitable electrical arrangement. | Use only the previously agreed safe contingency or reschedule/cancel service. Do not improvise extensions, electrical repairs or a new unassessed heat source at the venue. |
| A milk request is wrong or uncertain | Compare the cup mark, order roster and actual milk container/ingredient label. Determine whether the cup was misidentified or prepared with the wrong ingredient; appearance is insufficient. | Remake the identified order under the approved utensil/cross-contact controls. Do not relabel an uncertain drink or promise allergen-free suitability without supporting evidence. |
Illustrative acceptance decision
Fictional worked decision; not observed test evidence: Forty cups are prepaid and the host tally shows37 served. Record three unused entitlements and apply the written booking treatment; do not equate all forty prepaid cups with forty physically served drinks.
This is a teaching scenario, not a reported operator result.
Outstanding go / hold conditions
- Actual operator trial, accepted yield, packaging fit and handling controls remain untested; do not claim a completed field trial.
- Current supplier availability, unobserved input rates, tax and applicable Kenyan approvals require confirmation; foreign guidance does not authorize local operation.
Assign an owner, evidence reference and review date to each unresolved condition. Do not give every milestone a fixed calendar date when it depends on a crop, production, approval or competence cycle. Run only a suitable limited trial, reconcile accepted output and actual cash, and record whether the evidence supports holding, revising, proceeding within the limit or stopping.
