Okra growing - Worksheets, research and references
Keep evidence that answers a real operating question
For okra growing, the record should connect the promised output, its cost and the buyer's acceptance. Begin with:
Record picking dates, buyer comments on tenderness, rejected mature pods and the timing of repeat orders to test whether customer demand supports the required work rhythm.
An order and acceptance record
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Output and exclusions | Start with customers already cooking okra and agree the pod maturity they prefer, designing the picking routine around tenderness instead of maximum harvested weight alone. |
| Sale unit | accepted kilogram |
| Acceptance check | Let the buyer inspect and prepare trial pods from several picking sessions, identifying those that become unsuitable in their usual dish because of fibrous texture. |
| Missed-cost check | Include regular picking visits, careful handling and the cost of pods left too long, assigning these losses to the batch that required that picking effort. |
| Failure to investigate | A delay between buyer orders can leave plants producing pods beyond the preferred stage, so sales uncertainty quickly becomes a harvest-quality problem for this enterprise. |
Add the date, private customer reference, agreed price, advance, balance, promised handover and actual acceptance. Record a change before carrying it out. An unresolved complaint needs its own action and follow-up date rather than being overwritten by the next order.
A supplier and cost record
For each required input, record the specification, quantity, supplier identity, quote date, delivered cost, payment terms and reason for selection. Match the record to the receipt and inspect what arrived. Keep one-time setup, recurring inputs and refundable deposits in separate categories so that the same cash movement is not counted twice.
A weekly review
Compare accepted output with started output; reconcile money collected with outstanding balances; investigate rework and returns. Review whether measured capacity can meet the next commitment. A positive surplus estimate does not remove a shortage of cash caused by late collection.
Use sources within their stated scope
- World Vegetable Center: Agroecological production of vegetables in Kenya — Kenya vegetable-production context, adaptation to local conditions and monitoring. Does not validate every specialty crop in this collection. Reference recorded 2026-10-26.
- Egerton University: Production and Marketing of African Indigenous Leafy Vegetables — Official university route to a technical manual for indigenous leafy vegetables; specialist cultivation should be checked against the manual and local extension advice. Reference recorded 2026-10-26.
- KEPHIS eCitizen service portal — Official plant-health, planting-material and certification service entry point. Confirm the requirements for the exact nursery, seed or trading activity. Reference recorded 2026-10-26.
These references route sector and activity questions. They do not independently establish local customer demand, supplier stock, a complete budget or business profitability. A reference date records the earlier check; it is not a claim that every linked requirement was reverified today.
