Pattern drafting service in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand

The buyer and the buying decision

Tailors, independent makers and customers needing repeatable patterns. The offer to test is: Pattern drafting sold as a measured technical deliverable with agreed garment style, size and output format.

Define the pattern deliverable by garment design, body or sample measurements, intended fabric behaviour, seam allowance convention, and whether the buyer receives physical or digital pieces.

Separate interest from an accepted order

Draft one design and test it in a sample garment before selling a graded set.

The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.

Collect evidence specific to this offer

Record measurement source, design version, fabric assumptions, pattern piece inventory, test-garment changes, and the approved revision supplied to the buyer after the agreed review round.

Question to resolveEvidence to retain
What exactly will the buyer accept?Have a sample maker assemble a test garment from the supplied pattern without verbal interpretation, checking labels, matching marks, grain direction, and the approved silhouette.
What is included in the first trial?Define the pattern deliverable by garment design, body or sample measurements, intended fabric behaviour, seam allowance convention, and whether the buyer receives physical or digital pieces.
How will a prospect see the offer?Approach small clothing makers with a tested pattern example and an explicit revision scope.
What must happen before repeating the trial?A clearly labelled pattern that produces the approved sample under stated assumptions.

Decide whether to continue

Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. A technically tidy pattern can fail commercially when the sample maker cannot distinguish cutting lines from seam lines or the intended fabric assumption is never communicated.

If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.

Turn the example into a buyer test

Fictional pattern-drafting service: one adult long-sleeve shirt in one measured size, one sewn sample and one agreed revision. Deliver numbered full-size paper pieces plus cutting/construction sheet; multi-size grading, production markers and digital files are separate unless specified.

Buyer discussionEvidence to retain
Specification to confirmBody dimensions and added wearing ease are labelled separately; no automatic brand-size conversion.
Output to inspectA paper draft alone does not satisfy pattern-plus-sample order; retain original version to explain changes.
Failure that can defeat acceptanceSleeve seam does not match

Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.

What a failed test should change

Walk actual stitch lines and check notch positions/intentional ease.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
