Photo print service in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand

The buyer and the buying decision

Families, photographers and local organizations. The offer to test is: Print photographs to specified sizes with consistent cropping and handling.

Confirm whether the customer prioritises full-image preservation or filling the chosen paper size, showing crop previews when source proportions do not match.

Separate interest from an accepted order

Print a small proof set before taking a larger order.

The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.

Collect evidence specific to this offer

Record source dimensions, approved crop, paper selection, proof decisions and rejected sheets to identify which file problems should trigger a preprint customer check.

Question to resolveEvidence to retain
What exactly will the buyer accept?Compare a physical proof with the approved crop and count every print against the order before sealing separately labelled customer envelopes for collection.
What is included in the first trial?Confirm whether the customer prioritises full-image preservation or filling the chosen paper size, showing crop previews when source proportions do not match.
How will a prospect see the offer?Offer photographers a reliable size list and a clear file-submission specification.
What must happen before repeating the trial?Prints match ordered sizes and approved crops, without scratched surfaces or mixed customer orders.

Decide whether to continue

Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. Automatic cropping can remove faces or document details even when the print appears sharp, creating reprints that overwhelm the margin on small orders.

If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.

Turn the example into a buyer test

Fictional sample order: print 40 client-owned event photographs at 10 × 15 cm with a glossy finish, supplied as 40 individually selected digital files. Deliver one numbered set in protective packaging, with two paid test prints approved before the run. Retouching, licence clearance, image enlargement and delivery to multiple addresses are outside this scope. The buyer chooses either complete-image borders or an approved crop; borderless printing can trim the picture and should never be assumed acceptable for a group portrait.

Buyer discussionEvidence to retain
Specification to confirmThe signed manifest totals exactly 40 requested finished prints and identifies any duplicate quantities.
Output to inspectThe customer receives 40 accepted prints, not 40 sheets including proofs and rejects.
Failure that can defeat acceptanceHeads are cut off

Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.

What a failed test should change

Compare the borderless proof with the source contact sheet.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
