Pig finishing in Kenya: Operations and Quality Checks
Deliver the agreed result consistently
Choose a pig-finishing buyer and premises plan together, agreeing the sale product and collection route before the operation acquires animals with continuing feed and care needs.
The operating sequence for this offer is:
- Agree the pig buyer's liveweight, carcass or per-animal basis, then verify site, feed, waste and movement requirements before stocking a batch.
- Record stock purchases, feed, qualified welfare observations, actual weights and losses by batch, including labour and any extended holding period.
- Arrange lawful collection or processing, record accepted weight and deductions and reconcile payment against the exact sale basis previously approved.
Put acceptance into the job record
Define whether price is liveweight, carcass weight or per animal before sale.
Have the buyer review representative stock against the agreed description while competent support checks that the proposed site and animal management arrangements suit the intended production activity.
Inspect at the point where a correction is still possible, then again at handover. Record rejected or incomplete output separately from accepted output. A completed task is not automatically an accepted task, and an invoice does not establish that the customer received the right result.
Measure real capacity
Time preparation, the main operation, transport, cleaning, approvals and correction as applicable. The slowest stage determines how much you can promise. Where two orders need the same person, space or equipment at the same time, resolve the conflict before confirming both deadlines. An additional enquiry should not erase a commitment already made.
| Operating checkpoint | Evidence for this business |
|---|---|
| Before starting | Choose a pig-finishing buyer and premises plan together, agreeing the sale product and collection route before the operation acquires animals with continuing feed and care needs. |
| During delivery | Record stock purchases, feed, qualified welfare observations, actual weights and losses by batch, including labour and any extended holding period. |
| At acceptance | Have the buyer review representative stock against the agreed description while competent support checks that the proposed site and animal management arrangements suit the intended production activity. |
| At the pilot review | Keep stock identity, feed purchases, management events, buyer inspection and actual handover dates in one batch record, highlighting additional expenditure caused by collection or market delays specifically. |
Keep a correction and escalation rule
When inputs, access, specifications or customer instructions change, pause the affected work and confirm the effect on time and cost. Do not quietly lower the acceptance standard to avoid a delayed delivery. Keep rework caused by your error distinct from a customer-requested change of scope and agree the remedy clearly.
Feed commitments continue even when a buyer changes collection plans, so a finishing projection based on an assumed sale date can underestimate the cash required to complete.
Retain the minimum records needed to investigate a complaint without disclosing unrelated personal information. Use measured delivery and actual acceptance as the basis for expanding capacity, rather than the maximum theoretical output of a tool or production line.
Operating control points for this exact offer
| Sequence | Work method | Release checkpoint |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Contact the actual processor for current pig class, booking, weight basis, deductions and transport paperwork; obtain a qualified farm health/nutrition plan. | There is an agreed route to sale and capacity to care for six pigs before purchase. |
| 2 | Receive six documented pigs into the farm-approved biosecurity arrangement, recording source and each identity or approved lot mark. | Six received animals match the purchase receipt and source history; undocumented substitutions are held. |
| 3 | Keep feed-bag labels, feed issues, water supply checks and observations through the 120-day ledger. | Stock issued plus closing feed reconciles to purchased feed; model kilograms are not substituted for a qualified ration. |
| 4 | Book assessment and dispatch only animals cleared for the actual buyer and journey. | Count, identity and unresolved treatment restrictions are checked against the processor paperwork before loading. |
| 5 | Obtain signed accepted live-weight and deductions and reconcile all six animals. | 480 live kg is used only if the actual accepted ticket supports it; no live-to-carcass conversion is invented. |
Do not substitute a tick for an observation: record the count, measurement, approved sample or evidence reference used at each checkpoint. Mark unresolved work as held and identify who can approve the recheck.
Diagnose a failure before repeating it
| Observed symptom to investigate | Check the cause | Proposed response |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer price uses a different weight basis | Compare written order with live-weight ticket and deduction schedule | Recalculate using the actual basis before agreeing payment. |
| Feed cost rises while sale date slips | Count remaining feed and review measured stock condition with adviser | Revise the cash budget and buyer booking; do not restrict essential care to protect a target margin. |
| Pig cannot safely load or travel | Obtain competent fitness assessment | Hold with appropriate care and change the consignment and documents. |
These are diagnostic prompts, not proof of the cause in a real incident. Separate suspect output, record any correction and repeat the relevant acceptance check. Link rejected units, rework time, replacement materials, customer credits and collection delays to the actual job result.
