Product label design in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand

The buyer and the buying decision

Small manufacturers and food producers. The offer to test is: Design labels around a producers verified product information.

Develop label artwork from a client-approved information panel and actual container dimensions, separating graphic design from product claims, regulatory interpretation, and the producer's final release responsibility.

Separate interest from an accepted order

Draft one label and flag compliance information for the producer to verify.

The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.

Collect evidence specific to this offer

Keep container measurements, approved copy, variant codes, material choices, applied-proof photographs, printer feedback, producer sign-off, and changes required after handling the labelled product in realistic conditions.

Question to resolveEvidence to retain
What exactly will the buyer accept?Apply a physical proof to the intended container and have the producer check legibility, seams, curvature, batch-information space, and every factual claim before authorizing production printing.
What is included in the first trial?Develop label artwork from a client-approved information panel and actual container dimensions, separating graphic design from product claims, regulatory interpretation, and the producer's final release responsibility.
How will a prospect see the offer?Approach producers with a sample proof process and clear compliance boundaries.
What must happen before repeating the trial?Artwork fits the pack and factual content is approved; design service is not regulatory clearance.

Decide whether to continue

Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. A visually strong label fails when the container seam hides instructions, adhesion wrinkles obscure text, or a designer introduces unsupported claims the producer never approved for sale.

If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.

Turn the example into a buyer test

Fictional label job LAB-44 designs front and back paper labels for three handmade fabric storage-pouch sizes. Example front: 'Mtoni Pouches — medium — one pouch'; back uses client-approved fibre composition, care wording and maker contact. It is not a food, cosmetic, chemical or medical label. The deliverable is six artwork files fitted to a client/printer-approved 60×40 mm example label, a version table and an actual-size proof. Content compliance, barcode allocation and adhesive performance certification are excluded.

Buyer discussionEvidence to retain
Specification to confirmThe medium label cannot inherit large dimensions or unverified washing claims from a copy.
Output to inspectNo guide, hidden note or placeholder barcode is included in a final consumer-facing file.
Failure that can defeat acceptanceSize text wrong on one variant

Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.

What a failed test should change

Compare filename and master code with the six-face proof.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
