Rosemary growing in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand
The buyer and the buying decision
Caterers and household cooks. The offer to test is: Grow rosemary for fresh herb bunches or potted-plant sales.
Choose whether rosemary customers value ready-to-cut potted plants or consistent fresh stems, and design stock care and packing separately for these distinct purchasing needs locally.
Separate interest from an accepted order
Compare buyer acceptance of cut stems and potted plants from a small trial.
The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.
Collect evidence specific to this offer
Record plant form, customer purpose, usable stem feedback and time to sale, then compare returns from pots with paid repeat orders for fresh cut material.
| Question to resolve | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| What exactly will the buyer accept? | Have the buyer strip and use a trial stem or harvest a sample pot, checking usable leaf quantity and whether the presentation suits their intended routine. |
| What is included in the first trial? | Choose whether rosemary customers value ready-to-cut potted plants or consistent fresh stems, and design stock care and packing separately for these distinct purchasing needs locally. |
| How will a prospect see the offer? | Ask butcheries and kitchens serving roast dishes about their herb sourcing. |
| What must happen before repeating the trial? | Correct herb identity and a clean, consistent stem length help avoid disputes. |
Decide whether to continue
Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. A pot business can look successful from enquiry volume while cash remains locked in slow-moving plants that need care and increasingly awkward space for storage.
If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.
Turn the example into a buyer test
Fictional rosemary contract: a roast-meat kitchen orders forty 50 g sprig packs, specifying tender leafy tips rather than heavy woody branches. The kitchen approves aroma, sprig length and its usual discard of woody material. Supply two kilograms net and a sprig-to-waste worksheet. This fresh culinary offer excludes dried-herb jars, essential oil and medicinal products. A mature ornamental rosemary plant sold in a retail pot is a different purchase from bulk nursery liners.
| Buyer discussion | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Specification to confirm | The grade photograph shows accepted sprig length and stem thickness, and net billing follows that grade. |
| Output to inspect | Accepted pack weight and actual usable sprigs remain distinct; dried output is not booked from fresh kilograms without measurement. |
| Failure that can defeat acceptance | Packs weigh well but are mostly woody |
Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.
What a failed test should change
Strip a weighed sample and compare stem waste. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
