Sealant replacement in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand
The buyer and the buying decision
Households and property managers with deteriorated non-structural seals. The offer to test is: Sealant replacement on suitable joints after assessing movement, moisture and material compatibility.
Identify why existing sealant failed before replacement, separating accessible joint renewal from leaks, movement or substrate damage that need an appropriately competent building trade.
Separate interest from an accepted order
Inspect one small joint and test a manufacturer-supported compatible product.
The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.
Collect evidence specific to this offer
Record joint location, previous failure signs, substrate findings and care instructions, using the pilot to define which joints are suitable for a straightforward replacement service.
| Question to resolve | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| What exactly will the buyer accept? | Review joint preparation and the finished line with the owner, explaining manufacturer-directed care and use restrictions rather than promising immediate use or permanent waterproofing. |
| What is included in the first trial? | Identify why existing sealant failed before replacement, separating accessible joint renewal from leaks, movement or substrate damage that need an appropriately competent building trade. |
| How will a prospect see the offer? | Show a sample finish and separate cosmetic resealing from diagnosing hidden plumbing or waterproofing faults. |
| What must happen before repeating the trial? | Neat appropriate joint with clear curing and use instructions, not a blanket leak-proof guarantee. |
Decide whether to continue
Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. A fresh bead covers persistent dampness instead of addressing its cause, so discolouration returns and the customer mistakes a cosmetic renewal for a complete leak repair.
If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.
Turn the example into a buyer test
Fictional sample order: Renew three metres of accessible bathroom sanitary joint sealant around an identified fixture after a competent assessment of movement, moisture and substrate. Scope removal and replacement only where the underlying joint is sound and the chosen sealant is compatible. Exclude concealed leaks, failed waterproofing, loose fixtures, mould remediation and a guarantee that a new surface bead fixes dampness.
| Buyer discussion | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Specification to confirm | A failed underlying joint or moving fixture is referred before cosmetic resealing. |
| Output to inspect | The bathroom is not declared ready merely because the surface has skinned over. |
| Failure that can defeat acceptance | New sealant peels at one edge |
Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.
What a failed test should change
Review substrate preparation, compatibility and moisture record.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
