Spinach Farming Costs in Kenya: A Quote-Based Budget

What will a spinach farming trial cost?

A credible cost estimate depends on the identified crop, plot, water source and buyer specification. This page does not establish a verified cost per acre or a guaranteed yield. Decide whether the sale unit is trimmed leaves, untrimmed weight or agreed bunches before collecting quotes; the same field output can produce different saleable quantities under each specification.

Request quantities and terms, not just prices

Budget areaEvidence to obtain
PlotArea, access period, preparation needs and written land terms
Planting materialIdentified crop and cultivar, required pack or seedling quantity, lot and invoice
WaterSource, available delivery arrangement, equipment compatibility and operating costs
Field labourTime for preparation, crop care and picking at the trial scale
Trimming and packingLabour, rejected stems and leaves, scale and suitable crates
DeliveryRoute, stops, return of containers and payment collection

Check with the Water Resources Authority whether the actual proposed abstraction and works need an approval. A cost sheet cannot settle a water-rights question. Ask a competent local adviser to help select a crop and cultivation plan for the site rather than importing an unrelated growing calendar.

Budget cash at the right time

List one-time tools and setup, recurring inputs and the working cash needed until the buyer pays. A refundable deposit ties up cash without automatically being the same period's operating expense. Record equipment purchase separately so that a full purchase and its allocated cost are not both charged in full to the same profit calculation.

The real price of a seed pack depends on its specified content and delivery terms. A quote in grams is not a quote for a fixed number of saleable leaves. For each item note the supplier, exact unit, date, delivery charge and excluded items; leave unsupported lines unknown instead of converting them to zero.

Measure trimming before setting a unit cost

During a buyer-approved trial, record gross harvested weight, removed stems, rejected leaves and accepted delivery weight. Allocate field and delivery costs to accepted output, while retaining those losses as quantities that consumed resources. Do not publish a quoted cost per trimmed kilogram until both the numerator and the actual accepted denominator are known.

Make a small trial and set an affordable loss limit before committing to an expanded plot. This budgeting method is a planning tool, not a supplier quotation, local market survey or expected farm profit.
