Sportswear retail in Kenya: Risks and Launch Plan
Set the conditions for a safe commercial test
- Counterfeit branding
- poor durability after washing
A fashionable set can sell once but fail repeat demand when seams rub during exercise or a pocket cannot retain the item customers expected to carry.
A risk list is useful only when it changes a decision. For each risk, write the observable warning, who checks it and the response before the next commitment. Do not treat a reserve of money as permission to continue unsafe or unauthorized work.
Use a small, measurable pilot
Test a small range with one club and collect wear and washing feedback.
The pilot scope is: Select sportswear for a named activity and buyer routine, clarifying mobility, pocket needs, and supplier-supported fabric properties instead of treating all athletic-looking garments alike.

|---|---|
| Scope agreed | Select sportswear for a named activity and buyer routine, clarifying mobility, pocket needs, and supplier-supported fabric properties instead of treating all athletic-looking garments alike. |
| Output acceptable | Ask customers to try representative movements where appropriate, checking seam placement, waistband stability, pocket access, and whether the garment remains comfortable during the intended activity. |
| Costs recorded | Include sample wear feedback, returns from unsuitable cuts, supplier inconsistency, slow colour variants, and stock discarded because a defect prevents comfortable movement in use. |
| Buyer response recorded | Record intended activity, actual dimensions, fabric documentation, movement feedback, seam complaints, and paid reorders by garment function rather than relying on lifestyle photographs alone. |
Stage the launch around prerequisites
First confirm the buyer specification and activity requirements. Then compare suppliers, establish suitable facilities and prepare the operating record. Run the bounded trial when those prerequisites are in place. Review actual costs, quality failures and cash collected before increasing the commitment.
This sequence is not a promise that the complete business cycle fits into 30 days. Growing periods, qualifications, approvals, seasonal access and customer buying cycles can require longer. Revise the schedule when a prerequisite changes rather than skipping it to meet a launch date.
Choose continue, revise, pause or stop
Continue only when the scoped result is accepted and direct costs and payment timing are workable. Revise one part of the offer if the problem is identifiable and affordable to test again. Pause when required information, permission, skills or resources are missing. Stop the affected work when safety, consent or lawful authority is uncertain.
Keep a maximum test loss and unpaid-balance limit suited to your actual funds. A successful single delivery is useful evidence, but it does not establish year-round demand or justify committing every available resource.
Tie launch milestones to observable checks
| Risk signal | Evidence to inspect | Response to test |
|---|---|---|
| Bottom does not match top size | Compare both component labels and measured card. | Hold the set or re-pair only with authorised matching stock; update inventory for both pieces. |
| Seam feels rough | Turn inside out and locate protruding allowance, hard thread or damaged stitching. | Return for competent correction or reject the component; do not cut load-bearing stitches casually. |
| Elastic stays distorted | Compare relaxed shape with an unused matching unit and supplier instructions. | Quarantine affected lot for supplier assessment rather than advertise extra stretch. |
Illustrative acceptance decision
Fictional worked acceptance decision; no inspection has actually occurred: If all ten tops pass but one bottom has an open crotch seam, only nine complete sets are accepted. Keep the unmatched top as separate held stock until the correct bottom is replaced or competently repaired and rechecked.
This is a teaching scenario, not a reported operator result.
Outstanding go / hold conditions
- Actual model chart, measurements, fibre/care labels, supplier quality and real prices remain pending.
Assign an owner, evidence reference and review date to each unresolved condition. Do not give every milestone a fixed calendar date when it depends on a crop, production, approval or competence cycle. Run only a suitable limited trial, reconcile accepted output and actual cash, and record whether the evidence supports holding, revising, proceeding within the limit or stopping.
