Steel door making in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand
The buyer and the buying decision
Shop owners and landlords upgrading particular doorways. The offer to test is: Produce a steel door assembly with specified frame, lock and finish.
Specify the door, frame and hardware as one compatible assembly, checking handing and intended access before fabricating a steel leaf from a customer's rough dimensions.
Separate interest from an accepted order
Measure one opening and present a hardware-and-frame quotation.
The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.
Collect evidence specific to this offer
Record opening measurements, hardware references, frame alignment and closing adjustments, building a repeatable handover checklist before accepting multiple doors for a landlord or small development.
| Question to resolve | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| What exactly will the buyer accept? | Inspect operation, closing and finish with the buyer after fitting, checking the approved hardware and explicitly separating product workmanship from unsupported claims about intrusion resistance. |
| What is included in the first trial? | Specify the door, frame and hardware as one compatible assembly, checking handing and intended access before fabricating a steel leaf from a customer's rough dimensions. |
| How will a prospect see the offer? | Present landlords with sample hardware and clear installation exclusions. |
| What must happen before repeating the trial? | Door closes, locks and aligns consistently with the approved assembly. |
Decide whether to continue
Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. The fabricated leaf is sound but the frame distorts during fitting, producing difficult locking and repeat visits because installation sequencing received less attention than welding appearance.
If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.
Turn the example into a buyer test
Fictional sample order: One non-fire-rated steel utility door for an approximately 900 × 2100 mm opening, subject to competent final measurement and design. Quote leaf, frame, compatible lock/hinges, finish and installation separately. Exclude ballistic/fire certification, automatic locking, blocked safe exit and unknown structural alteration.
| Buyer discussion | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Specification to confirm | Do not cut from a single nominal doorway size. |
| Output to inspect | Keys, hardware record and use limits are handed to owner. |
| Failure that can defeat acceptance | Leaf twists after fabrication |
Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.
What a failed test should change
Compare flatness and heat-control inspection before coating.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
