Sweet potato growing - Worksheets, research and references
Keep evidence that answers a real operating question
For sweet potato growing, the record should connect the promised output, its cost and the buyer's acceptance. Begin with:
Record planting source, harvest condition, cooking feedback and paid grade split, retaining enough traceability to repeat the material customers accepted rather than merely its market name.
An order and acceptance record
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Output and exclusions | Select a sweet potato offer for a specific cooking preference, distinguishing roots bought for boiling from those valued for another preparation before committing planting material. |
| Sale unit | accepted kilogram |
| Acceptance check | Ask the customer to cook trial roots in their normal way and describe texture, flavour and peeling effort, keeping these judgments linked to the planting source. |
| Missed-cost check | Include root breakage during lifting, soil removal and transport of bulky sacks, with separate selling assumptions for sound whole roots and visibly damaged pieces offered elsewhere. |
| Failure to investigate | Yield alone can mislead when the chosen roots cook differently from the local preference, forcing discounts despite a healthy crop and apparently good harvest weights overall. |
Add the date, private customer reference, agreed price, advance, balance, promised handover and actual acceptance. Record a change before carrying it out. An unresolved complaint needs its own action and follow-up date rather than being overwritten by the next order.
A supplier and cost record
For each required input, record the specification, quantity, supplier identity, quote date, delivered cost, payment terms and reason for selection. Match the record to the receipt and inspect what arrived. Keep one-time setup, recurring inputs and refundable deposits in separate categories so that the same cash movement is not counted twice.
A weekly review
Compare accepted output with started output; reconcile money collected with outstanding balances; investigate rework and returns. Review whether measured capacity can meet the next commitment. A positive surplus estimate does not remove a shortage of cash caused by late collection.
Use sources within their stated scope
- World Vegetable Center: Agroecological production of vegetables in Kenya — Kenya vegetable-production context, adaptation to local conditions and monitoring. Does not validate every specialty crop in this collection. Reference recorded 2026-10-26.
- Egerton University: Production and Marketing of African Indigenous Leafy Vegetables — Official university route to a technical manual for indigenous leafy vegetables; specialist cultivation should be checked against the manual and local extension advice. Reference recorded 2026-10-26.
- KEPHIS eCitizen service portal — Official plant-health, planting-material and certification service entry point. Confirm the requirements for the exact nursery, seed or trading activity. Reference recorded 2026-10-26.
These references route sector and activity questions. They do not independently establish local customer demand, supplier stock, a complete budget or business profitability. A reference date records the earlier check; it is not a claim that every linked requirement was reverified today.
