Swimming instruction in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand
The buyer and the buying decision
learners and parents The offer to test is: Swimming lessons using a permitted pool and qualified supervision
Confirm permitted pool access, qualified instruction and rescue arrangements before defining a beginner lesson, matching supervision and activities to learners’ demonstrated water confidence rather than age or booking descriptions alone supplied by their guardians.
Separate interest from an accepted order
Run a limited beginner lesson with rescue arrangements in place
The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.
Collect evidence specific to this offer
Keep attendance, skills actually practised, supervision arrangements, incidents and guardian handover notes, communicating progress factually and preserving unresolved safety questions for competent review before accepting another lesson with the same learner group or pool conditions.
| Question to resolve | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| What exactly will the buyer accept? | Run the planned lesson under the agreed safety arrangements, checking controlled entry and exit and whether each learner can attempt the specific skill while remaining appropriately supervised throughout every part of the booked session. |
| What is included in the first trial? | Confirm permitted pool access, qualified instruction and rescue arrangements before defining a beginner lesson, matching supervision and activities to learners’ demonstrated water confidence rather than age or booking descriptions alone supplied by their guardians. |
| How will a prospect see the offer? | Approach permitted swimming facilities with qualifications, a supervision plan and a sample learner-progress record for a limited beginner group. |
| What must happen before repeating the trial? | No unsupervised learner exposure and a measurable skill goal |
Decide whether to continue
Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. A swimming lesson fails when stronger learners distract supervision from beginners, handover arrangements are unclear or guardians interpret a small improvement in confidence as proof of independent swimming ability that the instructor has never assessed.
If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.
Turn the example into a buyer test
Fictional pool pilot:two adult beginners in separate30-minute lessons at a permitted pool with a suitably qualified teacher and dedicated approved rescue cover. Participant numbers and lesson area require the pool’s own risk assessment; this example is not a supervision-ratio standard.
| Buyer discussion | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Specification to confirm | No lesson sold before facility accepts plan. |
| Output to inspect | No false pass or certification. |
| Failure that can defeat acceptance | Rescue cover absent |
Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.
What a failed test should change
Check named facility-approved cover and actual availability before water access.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
