Vegetarian lunch subscription in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand

The buyer and the buying decision

Workers and households choosing meat-free meals. The offer to test is: Offer a recurring vegetarian lunch with clearly declared ingredients.

Define the vegetarian subscription through a transparent ingredient list, recurring delivery days and a cancellation cutoff, making the initial menu varied enough without creating unmanageable preparation complexity.

Separate interest from an accepted order

Trial a short subscription period with a fixed menu and cancellation cutoff.

The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.

Collect evidence specific to this offer

Record subscriber menu choices, declared requirements, cancellation timing, paid meals and unused portions, using actual retention and preparation workload to refine the recurring offer rather than introductory enthusiasm.

Question to resolveEvidence to retain
What exactly will the buyer accept?Have subscribers review delivered trial meals against ingredient descriptions and portion expectations, noting repeat-menu fatigue, convenience and any dietary requirement the kitchen cannot reliably accommodate as promised.
What is included in the first trial?Define the vegetarian subscription through a transparent ingredient list, recurring delivery days and a cancellation cutoff, making the initial menu varied enough without creating unmanageable preparation complexity.
How will a prospect see the offer?Ask potential subscribers which delivery days they will pay for consistently.
What must happen before repeating the trial?Do not equate vegetarian with allergen-free; declare ingredients and cross-contact limits.

Decide whether to continue

Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. The subscription can create hidden waste when customers cancel after ingredients are purchased or expect unlimited dietary changes, undermining the predictable demand that originally justified recurring meal planning.

If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.

Turn the example into a buyer test

Fictional VEG-143 supplies ten subscribers for three lunch days,30 meals. Day 1 lentil-rice-cabbage, day 2 chickpea-potato-spinach and day 3 bean-chapati-carrot. Each day has a written portion sheet and full ingredient list. Vegetarian does not mean vegan, allergen-free, gluten-free or nutritionally complete; substitutions require approval. Subscriber ledger has ten rows and three date columns; mark delivered, cancelled or credited in each cell. Example V03 cancels day 2 before cutoff: production becomes 29 meals and its advance remains a credit/refund, not completed revenue.

Buyer discussionEvidence to retain
Specification to confirmAdvance money for undelivered meals is tracked separately from completed sales.
Output to inspectThirty planned meals do not equal 30 earned sales if cancelled.
Failure that can defeat acceptanceStock contains meat

Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.

What a failed test should change

Read ingredient label.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
