Vertical garden installation in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand
The buyer and the buying decision
Offices, restaurants and households wanting planted walls. The offer to test is: Install a vertical garden with an approved structure, water plan and maintenance access.
Agree whether the vertical garden uses freestanding or fixed modules, checking water supply, drainage and maintenance access while referring structural fixing decisions to appropriately competent installers.
Separate interest from an accepted order
Trial a small panel and assess fixing, drainage and plant survival before expansion.
The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.
Collect evidence specific to this offer
Log module performance, watering observations, installation changes and plant replacement effort, keeping unresolved wall or drainage questions visible until the competent responsible party confirms the proposed arrangement.
| Question to resolve | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| What exactly will the buyer accept? | Pilot one module and observe watering distribution and drainage, asking the customer to reach plants for routine care before expanding the arrangement to the full agreed wall area. |
| What is included in the first trial? | Agree whether the vertical garden uses freestanding or fixed modules, checking water supply, drainage and maintenance access while referring structural fixing decisions to appropriately competent installers. |
| How will a prospect see the offer? | Partner with competent installers and show real maintenance requirements. |
| What must happen before repeating the trial? | The planted system is secure and serviceable, with no concealed water discharge. |
Decide whether to continue
Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. A green wall loses appeal when upper plants dry out, lower pockets remain saturated or replacing dead plants requires dismantling sections that were inaccessible from the start.
If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.
Turn the example into a buyer test
Fictional installation coordination: supply and plant one manufacturer-designed six-pocket vertical planter on an approved ground-level private courtyard wall. Provide six suitable plants, system instructions, watering/drainage demonstration and a condition handover. A competent installer assesses the wall and specifies fixings/wet loads; installation proceeds only with owner approval. Structural design, waterproofing changes, elevated access, mains irrigation/electrics and unsupported DIY anchoring are excluded.
| Buyer discussion | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Specification to confirm | No wall strength or concealed-service position is guessed. |
| Output to inspect | The client can reach/maintain plants within the approved arrangement. |
| Failure that can defeat acceptance | Runoff stains the wall |
Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.
What a failed test should change
Inspect the tested drainage path and system instructions.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
