Window frame fabrication in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand
The buyer and the buying decision
Small contractors and property renovators. The offer to test is: Fabricate dimensioned metal window frames for a defined glazing partner.
Confirm opening sizes, glazing arrangements and window operation before frame fabrication, coordinating appropriate glazing expertise rather than treating every frame as an interchangeable metal rectangle.
Separate interest from an accepted order
Build one sample frame after confirming the required glazing dimensions.
The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.
Collect evidence specific to this offer
Record opening geometry, approved sections, glazing decisions and installation adjustments, then compare workshop dimensions with fitted results before producing repeated window frames for a larger order.
| Question to resolve | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| What exactly will the buyer accept? | Review the fitted frame's operation and the agreed glazing interface, checking drainage details with competent installers and documenting finish defects before completion signoff with the buyer. |
| What is included in the first trial? | Confirm opening sizes, glazing arrangements and window operation before frame fabrication, coordinating appropriate glazing expertise rather than treating every frame as an interchangeable metal rectangle. |
| How will a prospect see the offer? | Partner with glaziers who can jointly verify frame and glass dimensions. |
| What must happen before repeating the trial? | Frames match the approved measurements and glazing interface. |
Decide whether to continue
Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. A frame fits the opening but leaves no workable arrangement for the specified glazing, delaying handover because the fabricator and glazier never reviewed the same drawing.
If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.
Turn the example into a buyer test
Fictional sample order: Two steel window frames for proposed 1.2 × 1.0 m openings, including one opening sash each, through a competent fabricator and glazier. Final frame, drainage, glass rebate and support design follow site measurement. Glazing selection/installation is separately specified. Exclude unverified security glazing and obstructed required ventilation/escape.
| Buyer discussion | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Specification to confirm | Two nominally equal openings are not assumed identical. |
| Output to inspect | Do not claim a frame-only supply certifies the glazing or building. |
| Failure that can defeat acceptance | Sash binds at one corner |
Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.
What a failed test should change
Inspect diagonals, hinge alignment and site distortion.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
