Woven basket making in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand
The buyer and the buying decision
households and gift retailers The offer to test is: Woven baskets with consistent size and smooth finishing
Choose basket designs around the intended contents and handling pattern, agreeing opening dimensions, lid fit, handle style, and whether liners or decorative finishing are included.
Separate interest from an accepted order
Produce a sample set and compare actual material use
The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.
Collect evidence specific to this offer
Keep fibre source, base and opening dimensions, weaving time, load observations, handle feedback, and transport damage notes before accepting a repeat order for matching baskets.
| Question to resolve | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| What exactly will the buyer accept? | Ask the buyer to load and carry the sample as intended, inspecting base stability, handle joins, sharp ends, and fit in the proposed storage location. |
| What is included in the first trial? | Choose basket designs around the intended contents and handling pattern, agreeing opening dimensions, lid fit, handle style, and whether liners or decorative finishing are included. |
| How will a prospect see the offer? | Offer homeware shops measured basket samples, base and handle photographs, and a repeat-order specification they can compare with deliveries. |
| What must happen before repeating the trial? | Stable base and no projecting sharp ends |
Decide whether to continue
Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. A basket can meet external dimensions while its narrowing opening prevents the intended contents fitting, making actual loading tests more useful than attractive exterior measurements alone.
If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.
Turn the example into a buyer test
Fictional basket batch: weave two small open storage baskets, each targeting a 150 × 150 mm square base and 100 mm side height, without handles. Draft each base from ten 15 mm-wide flat stakes in each direction: twenty strips cut 470 mm long, allowing 150 mm base, two 100 mm walls and two 60 mm rim tails. Each basket has separate 10 mm-wide side rows, double rim strips and rim lashing. Intended use is dry desk storage, not food contact or carrying a rated load.
| Buyer discussion | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Specification to confirm | Unknown Kenyan natural fibres may behave differently from the reed tutorial; do not transplant soaking times as a universal recipe. |
| Output to inspect | Pack only dry baskets and describe the actual material and dry-storage use accurately. |
| Failure that can defeat acceptance | Basket leans diagonally |
Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.
What a failed test should change
Compare base diagonals and upright spacing with the layout guide.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
