Beetroot growing - Worksheets, research and references
Keep evidence that answers a real operating question
For beetroot growing, the record should connect the promised output, its cost and the buyer's acceptance. Begin with:
Record trimmed root weight, preparation losses, customer equipment feedback and the accepted pack arrangement, then compare repeat demand for the specific use selected during trial.
An order and acceptance record
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Output and exclusions | Decide whether beetroot is sold for intact cooking portions or extraction, and align root size, trimming and packaging with that customer's actual preparation equipment. |
| Sale unit | graded kilogram |
| Acceptance check | Ask the buyer to prepare a sample using their usual peeling or juicing method and report usable yield rather than evaluating exterior colour alone visually. |
| Missed-cost check | Charge the trial for root cleaning, stained packaging replacements and the transport weight of unwanted tops when customers purchase only trimmed roots for their kitchens. |
| Failure to investigate | A grower may target juice buyers yet supply roots that create too much preparation work, leaving a nominally suitable crop commercially unattractive at the quoted price. |
Add the date, private customer reference, agreed price, advance, balance, promised handover and actual acceptance. Record a change before carrying it out. An unresolved complaint needs its own action and follow-up date rather than being overwritten by the next order.
A supplier and cost record
For each required input, record the specification, quantity, supplier identity, quote date, delivered cost, payment terms and reason for selection. Match the record to the receipt and inspect what arrived. Keep one-time setup, recurring inputs and refundable deposits in separate categories so that the same cash movement is not counted twice.
A weekly review
Compare accepted output with started output; reconcile money collected with outstanding balances; investigate rework and returns. Review whether measured capacity can meet the next commitment. A positive surplus estimate does not remove a shortage of cash caused by late collection.
Use sources within their stated scope
- World Vegetable Center: Agroecological production of vegetables in Kenya — Kenya vegetable-production context, adaptation to local conditions and monitoring. Does not validate every specialty crop in this collection. Reference recorded 2026-10-26.
- Egerton University: Production and Marketing of African Indigenous Leafy Vegetables — Official university route to a technical manual for indigenous leafy vegetables; specialist cultivation should be checked against the manual and local extension advice. Reference recorded 2026-10-26.
- KEPHIS eCitizen service portal — Official plant-health, planting-material and certification service entry point. Confirm the requirements for the exact nursery, seed or trading activity. Reference recorded 2026-10-26.
These references route sector and activity questions. They do not independently establish local customer demand, supplier stock, a complete budget or business profitability. A reference date records the earlier check; it is not a claim that every linked requirement was reverified today.
