Custom slipper making in Kenya: Equipment and Supplies
Buy for the acceptance standard
The procurement decision starts with the result you must deliver: Matched sizing, secure upper and honest slip-resistance description.
Have the customer try a matched prototype pair, checking toe room, upper pressure, heel position, seam comfort, and ease of walking in the intended setting.
A tool or material is suitable only when it can support this specification at the pilot scale. Use the following shortlist as a starting point, not a compulsory shopping package:
- Sole blanks
- fabric
- patterns
- stitching tools
Write comparable requests for quotations
| Resource | Questions for the supplier |
|---|---|
| Sole blanks | Confirm the precise variant, usable quantity, compatibility, delivered cost, lead time, invoice and remedy for a mismatch. |
| fabric | Confirm the precise variant, usable quantity, compatibility, delivered cost, lead time, invoice and remedy for a mismatch. |
| patterns | Confirm the precise variant, usable quantity, compatibility, delivered cost, lead time, invoice and remedy for a mismatch. |
| stitching tools | Confirm the precise variant, usable quantity, compatibility, delivered cost, lead time, invoice and remedy for a mismatch. |
Ask for the exact unit or pack size, rather than accepting a price without a quantity. Where equipment is involved, check maintenance needs, safe operation, available support and whether you can obtain replacement consumables. Inspect a sample or demonstration where practical. A photograph and a low asking price do not prove suitability or available stock.
Connect procurement to the operating sequence
- Record dimensions. Record dimensions, existing wear and material description before quoting. Confirm which parts are being made, repaired or supplied.
- cut matched pieces. Check component compatibility on a sample before irreversible cutting or assembly. Record supplier instructions for adhesives and finishes used.
- assemble securely. Inspect attachment points and edges as the work proceeds. Keep product handling within the material and tool instructions you can support.
- inspect comfort and finish. Check the agreed function and finish before delivery. Explain remaining wear, care needs and any use limits specific to the item.
At each step, identify the input whose absence would stop delivery. Arrange that input before accepting a deadline. Compare buying with suitable hire or a competent subcontractor, while keeping the responsibility for inspection and customer handover explicit.
Inspect before release to use
Retain the quote and check the delivered specification, quantity, condition and identifying details. Keep unsuitable items separate while you resolve the discrepancy. Record supplier identity and payment reference privately; do not post customer or supplier personal data in a public planning sheet.
Include fabric direction matching, lining, sole trimming, failed size prototypes, and time aligning uppers as a pair rather than pricing only small quantities of material.
Limit the first purchase to the agreed scope: Design slippers around indoor or other explicitly stated use, agreeing foot dimensions, upper fabric, sole construction, and how the customer prefers to put them on. Expand the resource list only when actual orders and measured capacity justify it.
Exact procurement specifications for this offer
| Item | Specification to quote | Acceptance evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Five complete matching sole/footbed pairs | Size/material and supported upper attachment provided by supplier. | Prebooking gate: actual written sole-system sewing support and competent footwear-maker approval required; no suitable supplier/system has yet been verified. |
| Outer/lining fabric | 0.8 m² outer fabric plus separately budgeted0.8 m² lining, both known fibre/care and soft stable contact construction; actual pattern yield must be confirmed. | Trial seams and wet/dry colour transfer on scrap before cutting ten uppers. |
| Compatible sewing/attachment kit | Needles/thread and sole-supported method selected by footwear maker. | No universal adhesive for EVA/PE/PP; exact component guidance required. |
| Original paper patterns | Cut/seam lines and ten upper/lining cut count. | Mirror L/R and record prototype revision date. |
A usable quotation states the exact variant, comparison unit, minimum order, delivered quantity, tax, delivery charge, payment dates, expiry and exclusions. Obtain written clarification of substitutions; compare only equivalent scopes. Match the delivered item against the same check before releasing it to use.
Supplier evidence and limits
No matched public listing observation was established for this exact offer. That is a quotation gap, not evidence that the item is unavailable.
Any listing above is an earlier observation, not a fresh quotation or confirmed stock. Reconfirm suitability and landed cost. The supplier comparison in the operating pack separates purchase quantity from usable requirement when a minimum order creates surplus.
