Egg delivery retail in Kenya: Risks and Launch Plan
Set the conditions for a safe commercial test
- Transit breakage
- stock held beyond acceptable condition
A busy delivery round can earn little when breakage is discovered only after departure and every disputed tray creates another journey or an unpaid replacement.
A risk list is useful only when it changes a decision. For each risk, write the observable warning, who checks it and the response before the next commitment. Do not treat a reserve of money as permission to continue unsafe or unauthorized work.
Use a small, measurable pilot
Collect orders on one compact route and count intact eggs delivered per trip.
The pilot scope is: Plan egg deliveries around customers' storage space and consumption, deciding whether trays remain with recipients or must be exchanged and recovered on the route.
| Gate | Evidence before continuing |
|---|---|
| Scope agreed | Plan egg deliveries around customers' storage space and consumption, deciding whether trays remain with recipients or must be exchanged and recovered on the route. |
| Output acceptable | Have recipients count and examine a trial delivery before the driver leaves, checking intact shells, disclosed grading, tray condition, and ease of storing the order. |
| Costs recorded | Include cracked eggs found at collection, protective tray purchases, route vibration losses, replacement journeys, and time spent counting with customers at each handover. |
| Buyer response recorded | Record supplier collection, tray identifiers where useful, intact counts at loading and handover, breakage locations, customer absence, and payment settlement for each scheduled stop. |
Stage the launch around prerequisites
First confirm the buyer specification and activity requirements. Then compare suppliers, establish suitable facilities and prepare the operating record. Run the bounded trial when those prerequisites are in place. Review actual costs, quality failures and cash collected before increasing the commitment.
This sequence is not a promise that the complete business cycle fits into 30 days. Growing periods, qualifications, approvals, seasonal access and customer buying cycles can require longer. Revise the schedule when a prerequisite changes rather than skipping it to meet a launch date.
Choose continue, revise, pause or stop
Continue only when the scoped result is accepted and direct costs and payment timing are workable. Revise one part of the offer if the problem is identifiable and affordable to test again. Pause when required information, permission, skills or resources are missing. Stop the affected work when safety, consent or lawful authority is uncertain.
Keep a maximum test loss and unpaid-balance limit suited to your actual funds. A successful single delivery is useful evidence, but it does not establish year-round demand or justify committing every available resource.
Tie launch milestones to observable checks
| Risk signal | Evidence to inspect | Response to test |
|---|---|---|
| Cracked egg on route | Inspect affected egg and tray contact points at handover; compare loading condition record and transport arrangement. | Remove cracked unit from accepted table-egg count and replace from suitable traceable stock under operator controls; recheck adjacent eggs and improve protective loading. |
| Tray count differs | Count actual eggs and intact tray positions with receiver, not merely the number of stacked trays. | Reconcile shortage or rejects on delivery note and invoice; deliver replacements only from approved identified stock and obtain revised acceptance. |
| Producer lot unclear | Compare tray/source labels and invoice with the verified producer lot selected for route. | Segregate uncertain trays and withhold sale until traceability is established; do not merge them into a known lot to fill an order. |
Illustrative acceptance decision
Fictional worked decision, not a field-test result: Ten trays contain 300 eggs, but 4 shells crack during loading. Only 296 eggs are acceptable; replace 4 traceable sound eggs or agree the corrected quantity. Ten physical trays are not 300 accepted eggs.
This is a teaching scenario, not a reported operator result.
Outstanding go / hold conditions
- No trial, field test, customer transaction or specialist validation was performed. These are pending operating and acceptance checks.
- Actual available stock, delivered costs, tax, unobserved rates and applicable local approvals require confirmation. Source scope does not validate the entire business.
Assign an owner, evidence reference and review date to each unresolved condition. Do not give every milestone a fixed calendar date when it depends on a crop, production, approval or competence cycle. Run only a suitable limited trial, reconcile accepted output and actual cash, and record whether the evidence supports holding, revising, proceeding within the limit or stopping.
