Iced tea production in Kenya: Registration and Activity Checks
Define the activity that authorities need to assess
Produce iced tea through a validated recipe and handling process.
Choose whether iced tea is supplied as a freshly serviced event drink or a packaged product, seeking appropriate process validation for that exact format.
Describe that exact operation when checking requirements. State where the work takes place, whether customers enter the premises, who performs technical tasks and whether you manufacture, resell, deliver or coordinate the service. Requirements can change with these facts; a broad business category is not a complete permit determination.
Sector questions to investigate
- Check the proposed premises and food-handler requirements with the county public-health office before preparing or selling food. The Ministry checklist is a starting point, not a site approval.
- For manufactured or prepacked products, confirm the relevant product standard, certification, ingredients and labelling requirements with KEBS before sale.
- Obtain competent product-specific validation for preservation, storage and any shelf-life claim; the business brief is not a safe processing recipe.
- For dairy drinks or water treatment/packing, verify the exact activity with the relevant dairy or water/product authority; a delivery-only role is different from processing.
Keep registration separate from permission to operate
A registered business name does not itself establish approval of premises, products or professional work. Use the Business Registration Service to check the appropriate registration route. Ask the relevant county office which premises and trading checks apply to the actual activity. Confirm tax and invoicing obligations with KRA for your circumstances rather than copying another trader's treatment.
Prepare a written enquiry
| Information to provide | Business-specific starting point |
|---|---|
| Proposed output | Produce iced tea through a validated recipe and handling process. |
| Scope and exclusions | Choose whether iced tea is supplied as a freshly serviced event drink or a packaged product, seeking appropriate process validation for that exact format. |
| First operating step | Define iced-tea flavour, concentrate or ready-use format and container, obtaining an appropriate validated brewing, cooling and storage process before packed sales. |
| Quality and acceptance | Assess the approved recipe through its intended service method, checking dilution consistency, declared sweetness, container compatibility, and whether handling records remain complete during refills. |
Add the county, location, premises arrangement, scale, equipment and responsible person's qualifications. Ask which authority handles an issue if it falls outside the first office's remit. Record the answer, reference link, date checked and any renewal or inspection condition. A guide's reference list is a route to verification, not an approval document.
Decide what must wait
Do not offer a regulated service or make a safety, accreditation or certification claim that you cannot substantiate. Resolve an unanswered prerequisite before accepting work that depends on it. A demand interview can often precede trading; a paid or physical trial still needs the appropriate permissions and safe arrangements.
The product may lose customers when ice dilution changes the promised flavour between the first and last cup or unsupported storage promises create uncertainty.
No universal licence package, current fee or exemption is asserted here. The official links below support only their stated scope.
Prepare a precise activity enquiry
Describe this actual operating scope to the relevant authority or competent adviser: Fictional office collection: twenty 300 ml iced-tea cups with individual sweetness choices recorded before preparation. Tea, water and sugar quantities in the costing are invented trial allocations, not a recipe or storage claim. The trained operator must establish actual yield and safe handling. Bottled shelf-stable retail and delivery are outside this pilot.
Use these operating details to make the enquiry specific:
| Detail to disclose | Why it can affect the answer |
|---|---|
| Named tea product - One producer-labelled tea used under a competent preparation plan for twenty 300 ml servings. | Explain the actual premises, scale, use and who will perform the task. Ask which current rule applies to these facts. |
| Water and sweetener - Traceable water and a declared syrup or sugar product, with preference quantities recorded. | Explain the actual premises, scale, use and who will perform the task. Ask which current rule applies to these facts. |
| 300 ml cold-drink packs - Twenty compatible cup/lid sets and a carrier sized for all accepted cups. | Explain the actual premises, scale, use and who will perform the task. Ask which current rule applies to these facts. |
Keep the reply date, official source, exact activity facts and any conditions together. This is an enquiry preparation method, not a determination that a licence, exemption or fee applies. The earlier source dates do not mean legal requirements were rechecked today. Resolve these outstanding checks before relying on a broad business description:
- Actual operator trial, accepted yield, packaging fit and handling controls remain untested; do not claim a completed field trial.
- Current supplier availability, unobserved input rates, tax and applicable Kenyan approvals require confirmation; foreign guidance does not authorize local operation.
