Pallet furniture making in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand

The buyer and the buying decision

Budget-conscious household and cafe buyers. The offer to test is: Turn sound, traceable pallets into a small defined furniture range.

Source pallets with a documented suitability assessment for the intended furniture, rejecting unknown contamination and designing around usable boards rather than treating all recovered timber as free stock.

Separate interest from an accepted order

Build one bench and record usable timber recovered after rejecting unsafe material.

The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.

Collect evidence specific to this offer

Record pallet source, usable-board yield, preparation hours and buyer finish feedback, then compare recovered timber economics with purchasing suitable prepared wood for the same furniture design.

Question to resolveEvidence to retain
What exactly will the buyer accept?Review a finished prototype for stability, exposed fixings and splinters with the buyer, documenting material character and any limitation on the intended indoor or outdoor placement.
What is included in the first trial?Source pallets with a documented suitability assessment for the intended furniture, rejecting unknown contamination and designing around usable boards rather than treating all recovered timber as free stock.
How will a prospect see the offer?Offer cafes one photographed sample with truthful reclaimed-material descriptions.
What must happen before repeating the trial?Smooth contact surfaces and stable joints; reject suspect treated or contaminated wood.

Decide whether to continue

Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. A maker prices the wood as free but discovers much of the pallet is unusable, leaving insufficient sound boards and repeated sourcing trips halfway through production.

If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.

Turn the example into a buyer test

Fictional sample order: One pallet-derived coffee bench/table, approximately 1 m × 0.6 m, made only from known clean suitable reclaimed timber after competent inspection. This example is a low table, not seating, food-contact, child furniture or structural timber. Reject unknown spills, chemical odour, rot and contamination; an ISPM15 stamp concerns plant pests and is not proof of chemical cleanliness.

Buyer discussionEvidence to retain
Specification to confirmUnknown history or suspect stock is rejected, not made safe by sanding.
Output to inspectNo climbing or person-weight test as a table acceptance procedure.
Failure that can defeat acceptanceChemical smell appears

Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.

What a failed test should change

Review source history; sanding is not proof of decontamination.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
