Primary reading tutoring in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand

The buyer and the buying decision

Parents seeking support for a child's current reading ability. The offer to test is: Teach foundational reading through level-matched decoding, vocabulary and comprehension practice.

Tutor reading from a learner-specific starting point, agreeing language, decoding and comprehension goals, guardian involvement, suitable materials, and the boundaries of non-diagnostic educational support.

Separate interest from an accepted order

Use a short baseline reading task, then a consented trial lesson with a defined skill target.

The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.

Collect evidence specific to this offer

Record starting observations, unfamiliar words attempted, comprehension responses, prompts needed, learner confidence, home-practice feedback, and adjustments made to the next reading activities and materials.

Question to resolveEvidence to retain
What exactly will the buyer accept?Ask the learner to read unfamiliar but suitable material and explain its meaning, observing strategy use rather than relying solely on memorized passages or speed.
What is included in the first trial?Tutor reading from a learner-specific starting point, agreeing language, decoding and comprehension goals, guardian involvement, suitable materials, and the boundaries of non-diagnostic educational support.
How will a prospect see the offer?Seek guardian referrals and demonstrate a sample lesson without publishing child data.
What must happen before repeating the trial? The learner demonstrates the targeted skill; avoid guaranteed grade or diagnosis claims.

Decide whether to continue

Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. Lessons fail when learners memorize familiar pages while remaining unable to decode new words or explain a simple passage without the tutor supplying most answers.

If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.

Turn the example into a buyer test

Fictional reading lesson READ-121 is one 45-minute guardian-authorised session on short'a'word decoding and literal comprehension. Original passage:'Sam has a bag. A cat sat on the mat. Sam ran to the mat. The cat ran past Sam.' Questions:'Who has a bag?'(Sam)and'Where did the cat sit?'(on the mat). Output is a private skill note and two-word home practice, not a diagnosis or guaranteed reading-age gain.

Buyer discussionEvidence to retain
Specification to confirmRecord observed responses, not a labelled disorder.
Output to inspectNo public child photos/scores or claims of validated level.
Failure that can defeat acceptanceLearner echoes but cannot read alone

Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.

What a failed test should change

Compare independent attempt.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
