Pumpkin growing - Worksheets, research and references
Keep evidence that answers a real operating question
For pumpkin growing, the record should connect the promised output, its cost and the buyer's acceptance. Begin with:
Keep a fruit register with variety, whole-fruit size, customer cooking feedback, storage observations and collection arrangements, distinguishing immediate sales from fruit still waiting for buyers.
An order and acceptance record
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Output and exclusions | Choose a pumpkin customer whose storage and serving arrangements suit whole fruit, and specify whether the business sells intact pumpkins or coordinates a separate cutting service. |
| Sale unit | whole fruit or kilogram |
| Acceptance check | Ask the buyer to assess a cooked sample from the trial variety while also checking whether whole-fruit handling and storage suit their everyday kitchen arrangements. |
| Missed-cost check | Include field space occupied over time, loading assistance and fruit damaged during movement, because the visible harvest value can obscure expensive bulky deliveries to buyers. |
| Failure to investigate | Large attractive pumpkins can remain unsold when households cannot use them promptly and traders have no agreed arrangement for dividing them into affordable portions locally. |
Add the date, private customer reference, agreed price, advance, balance, promised handover and actual acceptance. Record a change before carrying it out. An unresolved complaint needs its own action and follow-up date rather than being overwritten by the next order.
A supplier and cost record
For each required input, record the specification, quantity, supplier identity, quote date, delivered cost, payment terms and reason for selection. Match the record to the receipt and inspect what arrived. Keep one-time setup, recurring inputs and refundable deposits in separate categories so that the same cash movement is not counted twice.
A weekly review
Compare accepted output with started output; reconcile money collected with outstanding balances; investigate rework and returns. Review whether measured capacity can meet the next commitment. A positive surplus estimate does not remove a shortage of cash caused by late collection.
Use sources within their stated scope
- World Vegetable Center: Agroecological production of vegetables in Kenya — Kenya vegetable-production context, adaptation to local conditions and monitoring. Does not validate every specialty crop in this collection. Reference recorded 2026-10-26.
- Egerton University: Production and Marketing of African Indigenous Leafy Vegetables — Official university route to a technical manual for indigenous leafy vegetables; specialist cultivation should be checked against the manual and local extension advice. Reference recorded 2026-10-26.
- KEPHIS eCitizen service portal — Official plant-health, planting-material and certification service entry point. Confirm the requirements for the exact nursery, seed or trading activity. Reference recorded 2026-10-26.
These references route sector and activity questions. They do not independently establish local customer demand, supplier stock, a complete budget or business profitability. A reference date records the earlier check; it is not a claim that every linked requirement was reverified today.
