Tea gift blending in Kenya: Registration and Activity Checks
Define the activity that authorities need to assess
Blend and pack tea gifts with accurate ingredients and origin statements.
Design tea gifts around an occasion and accurately described ingredients, confirming applicable sector requirements before using estate or origin claims unsupported by supplier documentation.
Describe that exact operation when checking requirements. State where the work takes place, whether customers enter the premises, who performs technical tasks and whether you manufacture, resell, deliver or coordinate the service. Requirements can change with these facts; a broad business category is not a complete permit determination.
Sector questions to investigate
- Check the proposed premises and food-handler requirements with the county public-health office before preparing or selling food. The Ministry checklist is a starting point, not a site approval.
- For manufactured or prepacked products, confirm the relevant product standard, certification, ingredients and labelling requirements with KEBS before sale.
- Obtain competent product-specific validation for preservation, storage and any shelf-life claim; the business brief is not a safe processing recipe.
- Coffee, tea and other regulated crop activities may need additional sector checks; verify the exact processing or packing role with the relevant current regulator before launch.
Keep registration separate from permission to operate
A registered business name does not itself establish approval of premises, products or professional work. Use the Business Registration Service to check the appropriate registration route. Ask the relevant county office which premises and trading checks apply to the actual activity. Confirm tax and invoicing obligations with KRA for your circumstances rather than copying another trader's treatment.
Prepare a written enquiry
| Information to provide | Business-specific starting point |
|---|---|
| Proposed output | Blend and pack tea gifts with accurate ingredients and origin statements. |
| Scope and exclusions | Design tea gifts around an occasion and accurately described ingredients, confirming applicable sector requirements before using estate or origin claims unsupported by supplier documentation. |
| First operating step | Define the tea or infusion gift product and confirm the applicable sector role, approving every ingredient and separating tea packing from gift assembly. |
| Quality and acceptance | Have recipients prepare the trial pack from its directions and assess flavour and presentation, checking opening convenience without the seller explaining every step in person. |
Add the county, location, premises arrangement, scale, equipment and responsible person's qualifications. Ask which authority handles an issue if it falls outside the first office's remit. Record the answer, reference link, date checked and any renewal or inspection condition. A guide's reference list is a route to verification, not an approval document.
Decide what must wait
Do not offer a regulated service or make a safety, accreditation or certification claim that you cannot substantiate. Resolve an unanswered prerequisite before accepting work that depends on it. A demand interview can often precede trading; a paid or physical trial still needs the appropriate permissions and safe arrangements.
A beautiful gift fails its recipient when decorative packaging conceals unclear ingredients or awkward preparation, so the purchaser's approval alone does not establish product usefulness.
No universal licence package, current fee or exemption is asserted here. The official links below support only their stated scope.
Prepare a precise activity enquiry
Describe this actual operating scope to the relevant authority or competent adviser: Fictional gift-tea blend: fifty 100 g tins, five kg total, using 4.5 kg assessed black tea and.5 kg assessed dried ginger, an illustrative 90:10 flavour formula. Actual tea grade/origin and ginger form must be confirmed; no caffeine, slimming or medicinal claim. Ask Tea Board of Kenya directly about current packer/blender requirements before trading; a gift tin does not remove product obligations.
Use these operating details to make the enquiry specific:
| Detail to disclose | Why it can affect the answer |
|---|---|
| Black tea - 4.5 kg documented grade/source lot | Explain the actual premises, scale, use and who will perform the task. Ask which current rule applies to these facts. |
| Dried ginger - .5 kg assessed food-use ginger in approved particle form | Explain the actual premises, scale, use and who will perform the task. Ask which current rule applies to these facts. |
| Gift tins/liners - Fifty 100 g tins with approved food-contact liner/closure | Explain the actual premises, scale, use and who will perform the task. Ask which current rule applies to these facts. |
Keep the reply date, official source, exact activity facts and any conditions together. This is an enquiry preparation method, not a determination that a licence, exemption or fee applies. The earlier source dates do not mean legal requirements were rechecked today. Resolve these outstanding checks before relying on a broad business description:
- Current TBK role/registration and product safety/label/date review required.
- Official requirements page dated 2021; no current fee or tea quotation asserted.
