Teacher resource design in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand
The buyer and the buying decision
Teachers needing usable activities, visual aids or classroom organization materials. The offer to test is: Design original teaching resources for a defined lesson task and learner level.
Design teacher resources around a specific classroom task, learner level, preparation burden, and delivery setting, agreeing editable formats, printing needs, and rights to supplied teaching material.
Separate interest from an accepted order
Ask teachers to test one small resource in an appropriate lesson and provide practical feedback.
The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.
Collect evidence specific to this offer
Keep classroom context, teacher preparation steps, learner responses, confusing instructions, material constraints, trial changes, and the final guidance needed for another teacher to use the resource independently.
| Question to resolve | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| What exactly will the buyer accept? | Ask a teacher to use the prototype without the designer present, checking instruction clarity, preparation time, class participation, and whether the activity supports the intended learning objective. |
| What is included in the first trial? | Design teacher resources around a specific classroom task, learner level, preparation burden, and delivery setting, agreeing editable formats, printing needs, and rights to supplied teaching material. |
| How will a prospect see the offer? | Present a small sample to teacher groups without promising official approval. |
| What must happen before repeating the trial? | The resource supports the stated task and includes clear usage rights and preparation requirements. |
Decide whether to continue
Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. A resource fails when it looks attractive but requires unavailable materials, lengthy preparation, or instructions that only make sense after the designer explains how the classroom activity works.
If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.
Turn the example into a buyer test
Fictional RES-138 designs one teacher pack for equal sharing: a five-step lesson card, six original task cards, a response sheet and checked key. Task card C3 says 'Share 20 counters among four drawn boxes'; key shows five per box. Delivery includes editable source and print PDF; teacher remains responsible for class suitability and safeguarding.
| Buyer discussion | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Specification to confirm | Do not request named pupil records. |
| Output to inspect | No promised official alignment without documented review. |
| Failure that can defeat acceptance | Card/key numbering differs |
Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.
What a failed test should change
Compare component register.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
