Terere Farming in Kenya: Seed, Water and Trading Checks
Describe the real operation when asking for requirements
Record the named crop, county, plot, water source, proposed works and sales arrangement. A farmer delivering raw bunches, a seller of planting material and an operator of a separate market stall are different activities. The answer depends on the facts, so this article identifies enquiry routes rather than issuing a permit determination.
Direct the question to the appropriate office
| Topic | Starting point | Describe in the enquiry |
|---|---|---|
| Planting material | KEPHIS | Named crop, source and whether you sell seed or only grow leaves |
| Water | Water Resources Authority | Source, abstraction method, expected works and location |
| Business structure | Business Registration Service | Proposed name and legal form |
| Tax invoices | Kenya Revenue Authority | Actual buyer and sale arrangement |
| Local trading | Relevant county office | Farm-gate sale, delivery or the proposed stall and premises |
KEPHIS provides seed-certification information. WRA publishes water allocation and permitting information. Ask whether the particular source and works require approval; ownership or rental of land alone does not settle that question. Record the response, date, conditions and any unresolved requirement.
Keep each approval within its actual scope
Registration of a business name does not automatically approve a water source, seed business or separate trading premises. A buyer’s acceptance of a bunch is a commercial result and is not regulatory approval. If the activity later changes from raw leaves to processing, ask again about the changed operation.
For crop identity and site-specific growing advice, consult a competent local adviser. The World Vegetable Center’s Kenya manual includes amaranth and requires local adaptation. It does not verify your planting material, establish a local buyer or authorize a pesticide. This article gives no chemical product or application rate.
KRA provides current eTIMS information. Confirm which invoicing route and records apply to your actual transaction, without copying a different seller’s circumstances. Keep the farmer’s identification and buyer details private.
Complete applicable prerequisites before accepting an order that depends on them. No fixed permit cost, tax exemption, approval outcome or guaranteed processing time is claimed here.
