Used pallet resale in Kenya: Customers and Market Demand
The buyer and the buying decision
Workshops, storage operators and furniture makers. The offer to test is: Resell sound used pallets with disclosed dimensions, condition and intended non-sensitive use.
Agree pallet dimensions, construction and intended reuse with buyers, checking provenance and condition while avoiding unsupported claims that unknown treatments or previous cargo make every pallet suitable for household projects.
Separate interest from an accepted order
Inspect a small lawful lot and identify buyers before tying up storage.
The purpose of this test is to establish whether the buyer accepts the specified result, delivery arrangement and payment terms. An encouraging interview does not establish repeat demand. Ask what the buyer currently uses, what would make them change supplier and who has authority to approve the first order. Record a refusal as carefully as an enquiry so that unsuccessful offers do not disappear from the evidence.
Collect evidence specific to this offer
Keep source information, size groups, condition rejects, repair time and buyer returns, recording which uses were discussed without turning the resale inspection into an unsupported load or treatment certification.
| Question to resolve | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| What exactly will the buyer accept? | Inspect representative pallets for sound boards, protruding fasteners and consistent dimensions, having the buyer assess suitability for the stated use before accepting a larger resale delivery. |
| What is included in the first trial? | Agree pallet dimensions, construction and intended reuse with buyers, checking provenance and condition while avoiding unsupported claims that unknown treatments or previous cargo make every pallet suitable for household projects. |
| How will a prospect see the offer? | Offer exact photographs and measurements to local workshops and storage businesses. |
| What must happen before repeating the trial? | Dimensions and visible defects are accurately disclosed; treatment or export certification is not invented. |
Decide whether to continue
Review the specification with the buyer before committing to tools or stock. A trial is commercially useful only if actual costs, rejected work, time spent and cash collected can be reconciled. A cheap batch loses value when nonstandard sizes frustrate buyers, hidden splits appear during handling or unknown contamination makes the intended reuse unsuitable despite an attractive surface appearance.
If a buyer changes the required output, record a new scope and re-cost the test. Do not count a request for a different product as proof of demand for the original one. Keep personal contact details in your private records and use customer statements publicly only with permission.
Turn the example into a buyer test
Fictional resale batch: acquire ten lawfully released used wooden pallets of one buyer-approved dimension for non-food industrial use, subject to competent suitability assessment. Record ownership markings, condition and intended handling/storage use. Exclude pallet-pool assets without release, damaged pallets sold as serviceable, unauthorized EPAL repairs/stamps, export phytosanitary certification and invented load capacities. A pallet looking intact does not prove it suits racking, hoisting or a particular load.
| Buyer discussion | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Specification to confirm | Every pallet is eligible for transfer, not merely lying outside a warehouse. |
| Output to inspect | The invoice does not invent EPAL, ISPM15 or load certification. |
| Failure that can defeat acceptance | Pool logo appears on stock |
Ask the buyer to describe one acceptable and one unacceptable result. Record the decision maker, price basis, quantity, handover point and payment date privately. A sample request, an encouraging conversation and an accepted order are different evidence. Keep the first commitment within your demonstrated capacity; no customer interview or successful trial is asserted here.
What a failed test should change
Check release/ownership with the responsible system/owner.. If the offer cannot meet that check, revise the specification or process before promising a repeat. Keep rejected offers and reasons in the same register as positive replies so that your record does not exaggerate demand.
