Sukuma Wiki Farming Costs in Kenya: Build Your Budget

What does it cost to start sukuma wiki farming?

There is no verified opening-cost figure for your plot in this guide. A useful budget starts with its measured area, usable water arrangement, production plan and buyer route. A seed price alone cannot establish a cost per acre, and the cost of a small trial bed cannot safely be multiplied into a larger farm without checking shared equipment and labour capacity.

Collect the quantities before collecting prices

Budget groupQuantity or evidence to obtain
Land accessArea, access dates, written terms, deposit and any essential preparation
Crop establishmentLocally advised cultivar and planting plan, seed or seedling quantity and replacement allowance
WaterSource, delivery method, fittings, storage if appropriate, energy and maintenance
Field workTimed preparation, watering, scouting and picking tasks at the intended scale
Harvest handlingSuitable crates, weighing arrangement, bunch-tying supplies and cleaning arrangements
Route to buyerStops, trip frequency, load capacity, empty-crate return and payment collection

Obtain advice on the actual site before buying bulk planting inputs. The World Vegetable Center publishes a Kenya field-manual route that includes kale; the publisher page does not provide a personalized bill of quantities.

Keep three different totals

Setup cash covers tools, essential adaptations and deposits due before operations. Operating cost covers inputs and work consumed during the chosen period. Working cash covers the timing gap between payments out and collections in. A refundable deposit uses cash but is not automatically a crop expense. Avoid charging a tool's full purchase price twice in the same plan.

Request quotes with exact units and delivery destination. A seed pack quoted in grams is not a seedling count, and a tanker delivery is not a price per litre until its usable volume is known. Record quote dates and what is excluded. Keep missing values unknown; an empty cost field must not mean zero.

Budget the selling route too

Time picking, sorting, tying, loading, travel, handover and collecting empty crates. Include a repeat trip when the buyer delays taking stock. Track discarded leaves and returns, because the crop that consumes water and labour is larger than the output that earns revenue.

Before committing, compare the full cash schedule with available funds and a maximum affordable loss. Reduce the plot or delivery scope if the trial cannot be financed through its actual collection dates. This is a quote-based budget, not a published earnings forecast.
